In-School Volunteer for Students Impacted by Incarceration – Bronx Academy of Letters

POPS the Club invites volunteers to support students who have loved ones in prison through weekly meetings during the school year. POPS is a 501(c)3 organization founded in 2013/2014 with chapters in multiple high schools and locations. The program emphasizes self-expression, mindfulness, and community engagement to aid healing.

Overview

POPS clubs meet weekly in high schools to provide a safe space for students affected by the carceral system. The program focuses on resilience, peer support, and opportunities for students to express themselves through writing, art, and conversation. Volunteers assist with meetings and activities.

Responsibilities
  • Support weekly POPS club meetings at Bronx Academy of Letters (Fall 2023 through end of the academic year).
  • Facilitate or assist with activities that encourage self-expression, mindfulness, and peer connection.
  • Help create inclusive, respectful spaces for students who have experiences with incarceration.
  • Collaborate with program staff and teachers to support student participation and well-being.
Qualifications
  • Interest in supporting youth impacted by incarceration; empathy and strong listening skills.
  • Ability to work with diverse student populations; commitment to confidentiality and safety.
  • Reliable, responsible, and punctual with strong communication skills.
