The Aparecio Foundation is a nonprofit organization that was designed as an economic development strategy to lift women out of poverty and as a community development approach to build the leadership capacity of low-income women. The Aparecio Foundation provides academic support and scholarship programs for high-potential, low-income women in public high schools through an eight-year multiple-mentor program.

This is an unpaid Volunteer / Intern position.

Job Description

The Social Psychologist/Researcher will be responsible for supporting marketing documents and establishing the organization’s position as it relates to stereotype threat and social identity contingencies. The Social Psychologist/Researcher is to focus on researching and identifying theories on stereotype threat (ST) and social identity contingencies and how they specifically relate to the achievement gap.

Responsibilities include:

  • Design and develop draft documents covering fact sheet for educators, fact sheet for the general public, a position paper, and a summary of the position paper.
  • Research and identify theories on stereotype threat (ST) and social identity contingencies and how they specifically relate to the achievement gap.
  • Define stereotype threat, give examples, provide psychological implications and concrete examples in identifying ST.
  • Determine when one has been a subject of ST, what are the situational (environmental) implications, how to reduce ST, and ways educators can do the same.
Qualifications

PhD student (post-doctoral fellow) in Social Psychology;
PhD preferred

Research interests:

  • Focus on how people cope with self-image
  • How group stereotypes can influence intellectual performance
  • The impact of stereotypes on achievement and interpersonal processes

Excellent written and oral communication skills are required.
