O6 - Transit System Based Outreach Specialist Non-driver - Transit
Role at Bowery Residents' Committee.
ResponsibilitiesResponsible for providing direct outreach, vulnerability screening, escort, and referral services for all homeless individuals encountered in the field during your shift. Record and maintain accurate statistical data on all individuals approached and referred, as well as case‑record management of clients receiving longer‑term services. Recognize the signs and symptoms of mental health and substance abuse issues and gain a working knowledge of all available services.
Spend the majority of outreach to homeless individuals at end‑of‑line stations, collaborating with various external agencies in joint outreach operations. Related duties as assigned.
HoursFull‑time, 37.5 hours per week.
QualificationsAssociates or bachelor's degree required, or equivalent experience. Current BRC employees in Community Technician, Program Aide, or comparable positions with minimum 6 months of continuous employment considered. Must have strong interest in direct services to homeless, mentally ill, and substance‑abusing populations. Valid state driver's license preferred. Good writing skills to provide written client interaction descriptions. Basic computer literacy required. First Aid/CPR certification or ability to pass certification test.
Spanish language skills desirable.

Program DescriptionJointly funded by the Department of Homeless Services and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, BRC’s Transit Homeless Outreach staff operate throughout the transit system 24 hours a day to provide outreach and case‑management services, assisting homeless individuals to relocate from MTA properties. Since 2005, BRC has operated this program for the New York City metropolitan area.
