JPB’s mission is to advance opportunity and justice in the US by reducing poverty, sustaining and enriching our environments, and furthering breakthrough medical research. Through our three core areas of focus – Poverty, Environment, and Medical Research – we work to eliminate systemic injustices that prevent people from thriving. We are dedicated to long-lasting, systemic change. That means we commit to our partners for the long haul, trusting in the strength and vision of the organizations we support to address some of our country’s most entrenched problems.
JPB was founded in 2011 by Barbara Picower, the current president of the Foundation and Chair of the Board, with funds bequeathed by her late husband, Jeffry. Over the last 10 years, JPB has grown to be one of the largest US foundations, awarding over $1B in grants across our programs.
The Poverty Program
Everyone in the U.S. deserves to achieve financial security, good health, and a voice in decisions that affect them. But millions of people are impacted by poverty due to longstanding structural inequities beyond their control. The JPB Foundation is working to address the systemic causes and impact of poverty by promoting economic justice and health equity and expanding access to our democracy.
We partner with national and local organizations to center the lived experiences of those facing the greatest inequities, especially communities of color and those living in poverty.
The Democracy Portfolio
Within the Poverty Program, JPB’s Democracy Portfolio seeks to ensure that all Americans, regardless of their socio-economic and immigration status, can participate fully in our democracy. Our partners aim to increase the voice and power of traditionally disenfranchised communities by expanding voting rights and access, encouraging civic engagement, and protecting and advancing the rights of immigrants.
