Reports To:Asst. Dir. Community Engagement and Advocacy

Job Summary:

The Communications and Community Engagement Coordinator will support agency-wide efforts that serve to further BOOM!

Health's public policy, advocacy, community organizing and communications priorities in alignment with the agency’s mission and strategic vision. The Communications and Community Engagement Coordinator will support the Access Health Initiative, which aims to increase education, advocacy, and access to healthcare, health insurance, and health literacy, particularly in the areas of HIV/AIDS, HCV, uninsured and underinsured population and drug policy.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Health Education

  • Coordinate the Access Health Initiative (Access Health).
  • Facilitate weekly groups (virtually and/or in-person)
  • Facilitate Health Education Groups and Workshops in accordance with program deliverables (virtual and/or in person)
  • Create resource materials for Access Health Initiative
  • Schedule, prepare, and facilitate presentations as part of the Access Health Initiative
  • Provide education and referrals to health insurance for uninsured or under-insured residents in the Bronx.
  • Cultivate and maintain linkages to insurance enrollment centers, healthcare providers, and community based organizations.
  • Reinforce health literacy and access as a core value of the organizational culture

Communications

  • Create content and graphics for agency wide initiatives and events including promotional material design and development.

Advocacy and Community Organizing

  • Uplift community organizing efforts and community awareness campaigns in accordance with BOOM!

    Health's Access Health Initiative and policy platform
  • Support and expand relationships with healthcare and health insurance providers in order to increase healthcare access for Bronx residents.
  • Expand community mobilization database.
  • Support events such as community meetings, workshops, and trainings.
  • Work with Advocacy Coordinator to maintain and expand community engagement in advocacy activities.
  • Conduct weekly outreach activities to ensure community is engaged and connected to services
  • Prepare monthly and quarterly reports that track department progress and accomplishments.
  • Maintain records of completed workshops, groups, and events
  • Mentor peer advocates and program participants.
  • Foster teambuilding and advocacy/communications skill development

Qualifications/Criteria:

  • Minimum of two years' experience working with special populations, including communities of color, people living with HIV and HCV, active drug users and the homeless.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience facilitating educational and supportive groups in the areas of health and wellness ( virtual and in person)
  • Knowledge and understanding of healthcare access and policy
  • Deep understanding of and commitment to harm reduction theory and practice.
  • Demonstrated commitment to advocacy/activism.

Education:

  • BA/BS degree in relevant field of study.
