In Honor of Jason GomezJason Gomez will always be remembered as an exceptionally dependable friend, a kind and joyful presence, and a fierce climate justice organizer committed to eradicating the disparities experienced by low-income communities of color. A lifelong Sunset Park resident, Jason joined UPROSE at age 17 in 2014 through the Summer Youth Employment Program, quickly becoming instrumental in mobilizing his community for the Climate Justice Youth Summit and the historic People’s Climate March.
He continued to dedicate his life to community organizing, environmental justice, and the fight against displacement, and in 2019 was nominated by UPROSE to participate in a scientific expedition to the North Pole to deepen his understanding of climate change. Jason envisioned a world where everyone could enjoy the right to a clean and healthy environment, regardless of their ZIP code or socioeconomic status.
He passed away on July 2, 2022, at the age of 25, leaving behind a legacy of generosity, community leadership, and unwavering commitment to justice. The Jason Gomez Legacy Fellowship honors his life, work, and vision by supporting emerging leaders committed to community organizing and addressing the disproportionate health impacts of environmental racism in frontline communities.
Founded in 1966, UPROSE is an intergenerational, BIWOC-led, internationally recognized community organization working at the intersection of racial justice and climate change through community-based planning and research, policy advocacy, popular education, organizing, artistic expression, and youth leadership development.
