The Nurse Manager is responsible for planning, implementing, organizing, and evaluating policies, practices, and services of the Nursing Department in collaboration with the Director of Nursing (DON). Supervises nursing staff and participates in activities related to general operations of the unit and department. Supports the hospital's mission to provide the highest quality care by complying with regulatory guidelines, meeting agency standards, and obtaining appropriate certification.
EssentialDuties
- Assist Director of Nursing in analyzing and evaluating department programs, policies and procedures.
- Develop and implement systems for documentation necessary to maintain accountability and compliance with external regulations and internal standards.
- Assist Director of Nursing in establishing standards, work methods and work schedules of department employees.
- Provide direction to nursing staff in planning, implementing, and evaluating patient care.
- Provide immediate feedback to staff when opportunities for improvement and enhancement of their professional growth and development are observed. Perform coaching/disciplinary action as necessary in accordance with CBA and collaboration with HR.
- Maintain adequate staffing levels by scheduling and providing coverage as needed. Participate with ADN/DON in interviewing, selecting and orienting new personnel in accordance with facility policies, work standards, methods and schedules.
- Assist Director of Nursing in preparing department budget and maintain budget as established.
- Provide adequate opportunity for staff training and education. In conjunction with Director of Nursing, ensure that staff meet mandatory and continuing education requirements.
- Coordinate and manage the unit/department daily workload. Ensure appropriate assignments.
- Conduct employee performance evaluations according to defined schedule.
- Participate in short and intermediate planning for the unit/department. Link department goals, budget and activities to strategic planning with the Director of Nursing.
- Ensure customer friendly services. Identify trends/potential problems and take appropriate action.
- Submit written reports within established time frames.
- Ensure that the department goals, procedures and practices foster a therapeutic environment.
- Collaborate with the ADNs and other department managers/caregivers in planning for coordinated services to the patients.
- Recommend changes to the physical plant that are necessary for enhanced patient services and regulatory compliance to the Director of Nursing.
- Share accountability for the clinical practice of nursing in accordance with professional, facility and regulatory standards.
- Participate in assessing staff skill competency.
- Perform all duties of a Registered Professional Nurse.
- Maintain adequate patient care supplies for unit.
- Ensure implementation of interdisciplinary team goals and interventions for the residents.
- Monitor medication administration system, investigate events and develop corrective action plans as needed.
- Maintain and recommend changes in physical unit environment to ensure a well-organized, safe environment.
- Collaborate with education coordinator to oversee orientation program for new employees and evaluate progress of the new staff assigned to unit.
- Coordinate and support all patient admissions and discharges for the assigned floor, ensuring compliance with SMH policies and procedures throughout the process.
- Participate in the facility's and department's quality improvement program.
- Participate in Department of Health surveys.
- Act as a member of interdisciplinary team.
- Formal education:
Associates Degree in Nursing required;
Bachelor’s in Nursing preferred. - Current NYS Registered Nurse (RN) license.
- ACLS, PALS, and BLS certification required.
- Minimum 3 years of nursing experience.
- Two years of supervisory experience preferred.
- Demonstrated leadership skills.
