American Traveler is hiring a Psychiatric RN for an Adult Psych Unit requiring an active NY RN license and 1 year of psych nursing experience.
Requirements- Active NY RN license required
- Current BLS (AHA) and ACLS certifications required
- PALS certification required
- Minimum 1 year of psychiatric nursing experience required
- Minimum 6 months of prior medical experience required (MS, MS-Tele, PCU, ICU, ER, etc)
- BSN preferred but not required
- CPI de-escalation training preferred; on-site training available
- Prior experience with physical restraint application preferred
- Acute care setting on a 26-bed Adult Psychiatric Unit
- Patient population includes adults 18+ with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, schizoaffective disorder, substance abuse, depression, and borderline personality disorder
- Admits are medically stable ER patients; unit does not accept detox or rehab patients
- Nurse-to-patient ratios:
Days 1:6-7, Nights 1:8 - Supported by PCTs performing safety checks, vitals, ADLs, and phlebotomy
- Uses Allscripts EMR
- No IVs administered on this unit; RNs may perform IM injections and phlebotomy
- Charge Nurse/ANCC coverage 24/7; travelers may be placed in charge role with reduced patient load
- Physical restraints (4-point leather) used only when de-escalation techniques are unsuccessful
- RNs manage CPAP/BiPAP as needed, though rarely used
- No telemetry monitoring on this unit
- 12-hour shifts:
Days 7a-730p, Nights 7p-730a - Every other weekend required
- Holiday rotation required (2-3 per year)
- No call or standby requirements
- Travelers float first to other adolescent or adult psych units, excluding crisis/acute or detox/rehab units
- Provide direct nursing care to adult psychiatric patients, including medication administration, phlebotomy, and IM injections
- Utilize CPI de-escalation techniques to minimize use of physical restraints
- Unit-specific orientation is 2-4 days with a preceptor, including orientation to multiple units for floating purposes
- RN scrub color is Royal Blue
- First-time travelers are welcome to apply
- Excessive call-ins are taken seriously and could affect continued assignment
