The Veterinary Technician supports hospital operations by providing quality veterinary care and exceptional service to patients and clients. Responsibilities include assessing animal needs, conducting examinations and diagnostic procedures, assisting during surgery and operations, providing nursing care, feeding patients, maintaining medical supplies and equipment, overseeing triage and discharge, and maintaining accurate patient medical records.
Key Responsibilities- Determine animal requirements by conducting examinations, interviewing owners, reviewing care plans, completing laboratory tests, and diagnostic imaging.
- Take vital signs, collect samples, administer medications, vaccines, and bandage or wrap wounds.
- Support patient examinations and operations by assembling supplies, bringing patients to examination rooms, restraining patients, and aiding as directed by the veterinarian.
- Apply comprehensive knowledge of anatomy, physiology, disease, pharmacology, equipment usage, and drug administration.
- Obtain and verify medications; maintain a safe, secure, healthy, and humane environment by sterilizing and wrapping instruments, disinfecting areas, storing supplies properly, and following legal regulations.
- Ensure patients have food and water, keep rooms, cages, and equipment clean, and monitor for clinical signs of disease.
- Fill prescriptions, administer medications, log and secure controlled drugs, and maintain accurate medical records in the database.
- Communicate patient status to owners as directed by the veterinarian.
- Maintain equipment per operating instructions, troubleshoot breakdowns, perform preventive maintenance, and call for repairs.
- Manage inventory and place orders for needed supplies.
- Participate in educational opportunities and stay current with professional journals.
- Release patients to owners, ensuring they are clean and groomed.
- Understand and follow oral and written directions; perform other duties as assigned by the manager or practice.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT) required for New York State.
- Experience with veterinary appointments, surgeries, and nursing care for hospitalized and critical patients.
- Equivalent combination of education, certification, training, and/or experiences may be considered.
- Knowledge of pre‑op and post‑op care for pets, basic nursing, and ability to demonstrate correct procedures in catheter placement, phlebotomy, emergency medicine, and digital radiology.
- Ability to restrain patients per standard procedures and monitor sedation as directed by the veterinarian.
- Work safely with sick animals, hazardous materials, cleaning chemicals, gas anesthetics, zoonotic diseases, and unpleasant odors.
- Display confidence and reassurance with stressed, ill, or painful pets.
- Communicate professionally and maturely.
- Flexible scheduling; willing to perform strenuous tasks including lifting, cleaning, and constant motion.
- May include standing, walking, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and handling moderately heavy animals up to 50 pounds.
- Answer phones and perform other duties as needed by the hospital.
