This is a highly skilled, turf and ornamental maintenance position to perform applications of fungicides, herbicides, insecticides, adjuvants and fertilizer as necessary to all City parks and grounds. Also performs other turf and building maintenance to all City owned facilities. Work is performed under direct supervision of the Leisure Services Foreman.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to the position.
- Maintains a fertilization, weed control, and insecticide program for turf, ornamental beds, parking areas, fence lines, etc.
- Maintains chemical inventory and application records as required by the City of Callaway and other agencies.
- Maintains all City parks and grounds by mowing and trimming grass and weeds, picking up litter and other objects.
- Inspects turf, trees, and ornamental plantings for nutrients, insects, and weed problem areas, then consults with Foreman for course of action.
- Calibrates equipment and applies various chemicals to all City grounds as required to control insects, weeds, or fungus.
- Prepares City athletic fields for competitive play by dragging and lining fields.
- Assists in the installation and repair of irrigation systems.
- Assists with the landscaping of parks and other City grounds.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Knowledge of turf grass and ornamental plant management.
- Knowledge of tools and equipment used in chemical and fertilizer applications, including calibration procedures.
- Ability to operate trucks, utility vehicles, tractors, boom sprayers, backpack sprayers, fertilizer spreaders, etc.
- Ability to work under adverse weather conditions.
- Ability to perform tasks under general supervision.
- Ability to read and comprehend written instructions and pesticide labels.
- Ability to maintain application logs, work logs, and simple correspondence.
- Ability to effectively present information in one‑on‑one and small group situations.
- High school diploma or G.E.D.
- Three (3) years of experience in ornamental and turf maintenance.
- Valid State of Florida Class E driver’s license, CDL preferred.
- Possesses a Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Limited Lawn and Ornamental applicator license within six (6) months of employment.
- A comparable amount of training, education or experience may be substituted for certain minimum qualification requirements.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions. The employee occasionally works in precarious places and may be occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals.
The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
