Duties Description

The seasonal field technician will be a part of a team working on population monitoring and habitat/life history description for the Atlantic Coast Leopard Frog (Lithobates kauffeldi) to meet the goals of NYSDEC's State Wildlife Action Plan. Duties of this technician include installation and maintenance of automated audio recording systems, identifying frog calls from recordings, capturing frogs and fitting them with radio transmitters, tracking frogs using radio telemetry, habitat assessment via water and vegetation sampling, data entry and organization, and other duties as deemed necessary.

Work will take place in wetlands and require navigation through muddy terrain with thick vegetation. The technician must be able to work in rain and windy conditions. Other wildlife surveying such as assistance with duck banding, river otter surveys, and muskrats surveys may be required.

Minimum Qualifications

Thirty (30) semester credit hours, including 12 semester credit hours in fisheries, marine resources or wildlife management; mariculture; marine biology; aquaculture; aquatic, marine or terrestrial ecology; zoology; marine technology; botany; limnology; hydrology; or oceanography.

Additional Comments

This is a hourly appointment currently funded through 3/31/2026, with a likelihood of continuing beyond that date. Program needs and funding will determine actual termination date. Actual work schedule, duties and travel requirements may vary and will be discussed at the interview. Must have a valid driver's license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position. Must be able to negotiate difficult terrain.

Must be able to work in remote areas. Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions. Travel may be required. Overnight travel may be required. Must be able to lift and move objects up to 70 pounds.
