Position OverviewThe Veterinary Technician supports hospital operations by providing dedicated quality veterinary care and exceptional service. Responsibilities include providing patient care, determining animal requirements, conducting examinations, diagnostic procedures, assisting during surgery and operations, providing nursing care, feeding, maintaining supplies, overseeing triage and discharge, and maintaining records.
Key Responsibilities- Determine animal requirements by conducting examinations and reviews
- Care for patients: vital signs, sample collection, medication, vaccination, bandaging
- Support examinations and operations: gather supplies, restrain patients, assist veterinarian
- Provide expert pet care applying knowledge of anatomy, physiology, disease, pharmacology, equipment
- Obtain and verify medications
- Maintain patient’s food, water, cleaning and observe clinical signs
- Fill prescriptions and administer meds, document controlled drugs
- Ensure a safe, healthy, humane environment: sterilize instruments, disinfect areas, store supplies
- Maintain medical records accurately and timely
- Communicate with pet owners about patient status
- Maintain equipment: troubleshoot, preventive maintenance, request repairs
- Manage inventory and place orders
- Update job knowledge through education and journals
- Release pets: ensure clean, groomed before release
- Follow written and oral directions
- Perform additional duties as assigned by Manager or practice
- High school diploma or GED
- Two or more years of experience with veterinary appointments, surgeries, and nursing care for hospitalized and critical patients
- A veterinary assistant or veterinary technician who understands kennel shifts will be rotated
- May consider an equivalent combination of education, certification, training, and/or experiences
- At least two years of VA/VT experience
