Description

The Adventure Course Facilitator will assist with outdoor education and leadership development programs for people of all abilities and all ages. Activities may include, but are not limited to, Challenge Course facilitation, rock climbing, zip-lining, backpacking, canoeing, environmental education, development initiatives and group lessons and discussions. General responsibilities include leading outdoor expeditions (length of programs vary), group management, curriculum and lesson plan development and implementation, course logistics, and field risk management.

The Adventure Course Facilitator will use the Root Farm Challenge Course to provide an opportunity for groups to recognize and safely reach their potential while ensuring challenge by choice. This will include promoting self-confidence, positive group dynamics and the expansion of problem-solving abilities.

Core Responsibilities
  • Assist with outdoor education programs for diverse groups of people and group sizes; must have a good understanding of group management.
  • Assist with small and large group lesson plans based on partner needs and desired goals and objectives.
  • Lead Challenge Course, rock climbing, zip-lining, backpacking, canoeing, environmental education, development initiatives and group lessons and discussions, outdoor travel and outdoor activities and formal lessons, that are age- and ability appropriate, and in accordance with industry standards for education and safety.
  • Demonstrate the ability to use sound judgment to ensure safety on all parts of the course throughout a program while having the ability to handle and resolve unexpected circumstances.
  • Complete daily inspections of ropes course elements.
  • Show competency in the technical skills associated with challenge course operations, including, knots, belay skills and personal protective equipment, such as helmets and harnesses.
  • Display leadership with effective debriefing and closure for each element and/or activity.
  • Perform logistical tasks such as packing and cleaning gear, cooking, maintaining and repairing equipment, and setting up and taking down camp, as appropriate for courses worked.
  • Conduct outdoor programming in accordance with leave no trace ethics and techniques for environmental stewardship.
  • Take part in staff meetings, educational meetings and trainings, as assigned.
  • Monitor quality of all programs and complete periodic audits as needed.
  • Establish positive relationships and maintain regular communication with parents and caregivers to ensure satisfaction and resolve any issues.
  • Establish a work environment that creates positive communication between supervisors and employees and assimilates new employees to the Agency’s culture, values and mission.
  • Ensure compliance with all pertinent government and agency regulations and operating standards.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma.
  • Minimum of 12-month experience working in outdoor education programs and challenge course facilitation
  • Experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities.
  • Experience/certification related to operation of a Ropes/Challenge course preferred.
  • Travel is required. Must have a valid New York State Driver’s License.
