Postdoctoral Research Associate - Machine Learning X-Ray Spectroscopy

This is a joint position between the National Synchrotron Light Source II and the Condensed Matter Physics and Materials Science department, which plans to develop new approaches for using machine learning to analyze X‑ray data, particularly Resonant Inelastic X‑ray Scattering (RIXS). The position will collaborate with experts in RIXS experiments (Mark Dean), computational and data‑driven methodologies (Max Rakitin and Seher Karakuzu), and RIXS theory (Steve Johnston and Seher Karakuzu).

The successful candidate will join a large multi‑institutional team focusing on developing the next generation of machine learning driven approaches to analyzing scattering data on quantum materials. The BNL‑lead part of the project will focus on new ways to extract electronic structure information from Resonant Inelastic X‑ray Scattering (RIXS) in concert with Inelastic Neutron Scattering (INS) and x‑ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS).

The appointment will be for an 18‑month term.

• Develop methods to co‑analyze multiple datasets using machine learning methods
• Apply novel methodologies to quantum materials to better understand their electronic structure

• Experience with scientific programming
• Requires a PhD in condensed matter physics, materials science, physical chemistry, computational science, or a related field
• Ability to analyze complex multi‑dimensional datasets

• Experience developing Python programs
• Experience with machine learning approaches to analyzing data
• Knowledge of high‑performance computing, such as parallelization, the use of C++, or interfacing with specialized linear algebra packages

• Candidates must have received a Ph.D. by the commencement of employment.
• BNL policy requires that after obtaining their PhD, eligible candidates for research associate appointments may not exceed a combined total of 5 years of relevant work experience as a post‑doc and/or in an R&D position, excluding time associated with family planning, military service, illness or other life‑changing events.

Brookhaven National Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. The full salary range for this position is $71,900.00 - $88,000.00 / year. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate's qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
