Department of Applied Physics and Applied Mathematics at Columbia University invites applications for an Associate Research Scientist position in theoretical condensed matter and materials physics, with an emphasis on the development of computational and analytical methods for strongly correlated electron systems. This position is part of a research program dedicated to advancing the Variational Discrete Action Theory (VDAT) – a novel variational approach to the quantum many‑body problem.

Responsibilities

Candidates will conduct theoretical and computational research on strongly correlated electron systems, focusing on variational and discrete‑action methods. Responsibilities include developing new computational techniques, writing code, mentoring students, collaborating with a team, and communicating results orally and in writing.

Qualifications

• Candidates must have a PhD in physics, materials science, applied mathematics, chemistry, or a related field and a minimum of 2 years of relevant post‑PhD experience.
