Position: Postdoctoral Research Scientist (Dr. Millie Embree's Laboratory)
Location: New York

Overview

The Embree's Laboratory at Columbia University, College of Dental Medicine is recruiting a talented and motivated Postdoctorate Scientist to advance our NIH-funded program in skeletal biology, osteoarthritis, and regenerative medicine. Our group integrates mouse genetics, large-animal models, biomaterials, and sequencing approaches to uncover mechanisms of joint development and degeneration and to develop novel therapies.

Key Responsibilities
  • Mouse genetics & model development
    :
    Design, generate, and characterize new transgenic and knockout mouse models to investigate stem/progenitor cell fate, cell niches, and osteoarthritis pathogenesis.
  • Cell sequencing
    :
    Lead studies involving scRNA-seq, spatial transcriptomics, and multi-omics integration to define cell states in development and disease.
  • Bioinformatics
    :
    Apply advanced computational tools to analyze sequencing datasets, identify molecular drivers of cell fate, and integrate data across species (mouse, rabbit, porcine, human).
  • Experimental biology
    :
    Contribute to complementary in vitro and in vivo assays, including biomaterial/hydrogel fabrication, primary cell culture, biomechanical testing, and histological analyses.
  • Maintain precise records (daily lab journals, animal logs) and ensure compliance with animal research standards.
  • Actively engage in weekly lab meetings and one-on-one mentoring sessions with Dr. Mildred Embree.
Qualifications
  • PhD (or equivalent) in genetics, bioinformatics, biomedical sciences, or related field.
  • Proven expertise in mouse genetics (breeding, colony management, CRISPR/Cas9 or other engineering methods) and/or bioinformatics (R, Python, Seurat, Cell Ranger, or comparable platforms).
  • Demonstrated track record with single-cell sequencing, spatial transcriptomics, or multi-omics pipelines strongly preferred.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
