The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) is a pioneer of purpose-driven science and Cornell University’s second largest college. We work across disciplines to tackle the challenges of our time through world-renowned research, education, and outreach. The questions we probe and the answers we seek focus on three overlapping concerns:
We believe that achieving next-generation scientific breakthroughs requires an understanding of the world’s complex, interlocking systems. We believe that access to nutritious food and a healthy environment is a fundamental human right. We believe that ensuring a prosperous global future depends on the ability to support local people and communities everywhere. By working in and across multiple scientific areas, CALS can address challenges and opportunities of the greatest relevance, here in New York, across the nation, and around the world.
Position Function
The core function of the position will be to conduct research on the regulation of bacterial development and antibiotic production in Dr. Kelley Gallagher’s laboratory in Cornell University’s Department of Microbiology. Ongoing projects are focused on understanding how the process of sporulation is regulated in the genus Streptomyces, examining how these regulatory pathways have evolved in the Phylum Actinomycetota, and leveraging this knowledge to manipulate antibiotic production.
The Department of Microbiology in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Cornell University has eleven active research laboratories. It serves as the home Department for the Graduate Field of Microbiology (with >40 affiliated faculty members) and provides a center of expertise for numerous aspects of microbial biology. The faculty and staff offer numerous advanced courses for both undergraduate and graduate level students.
Research within the Department is focused on Molecular and Environmental Microbiology and includes specific expertise in molecular genetics, gene regulation, genomics, microbial cell biology, bioremediation, symbionts, pathogens, and ecosystems.
The Research Associate position will contribute to at least one of the active projects involving the study of Streptomyces development. Approaches may include molecular genetics, bacterial physiology, genomics and biochemistry. The Research Associate will also be responsible for maintenance and operation of lab equipment necessary for completion of research projects, and provide insight into emerging opportunities that will facilitate or expedite research.
This is a 85% FTE position located in Ithaca, New York. This is a one-year appointment with possible extension depending on funding and performance.
