Overview

The Gear Technician is responsible for maintaining, repairing, and ensuring the safe operation of all lifting equipment used in terminal and stevedoring operations. This role involves conducting inspections, troubleshooting faults, organizing and maintaining lifting gear inventory, and ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory standards. The technician will also coordinate the ordering of replacement parts and maintain accurate records of all lifting gear assets.

Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities:

  • Inspect, test, and certify lifting gear and associated equipment (slings, shackles, spreader bars, hooks, etc.) in accordance with company and regulatory standards.
  • Perform preventive maintenance and repairs on lifting gear to ensure reliability and safety.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical issues and recommend corrective actions.
  • Maintain an organized inventory of lifting gear and parts, including tagging, logging, and tracking equipment.
  • Order replacement parts and supplies as required, ensuring minimum stock levels are maintained.
  • Keep accurate records of inspections, maintenance, and certifications.
  • Ensure all lifting gear complies with OSHA, ANSI, and other applicable regulations.
  • Support operations by providing lifting gear solutions and responding to urgent maintenance needs.
  • Promote and uphold safety culture across all activities.
Qualifications

Qualifications & Skills:

  • Previous experience in lifting gear maintenance, rigging, or mechanical repair (stevedoring, port, or heavy industrial environment preferred).
  • Knowledge of lifting gear standards, inspection criteria, and certification requirements.
  • Certified Rigger (NCCCO or equivalent) is highly preferred.
  • Strong mechanical and troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to organize, track, and manage inventory.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Working Conditions
  • Able to lift up to 50lbs
  • Must be eligible to obtain a TWIC card.
  • Outside on vessel berth / non-air-conditioned warehouse
Salary Range

$25.00 to $30.00 per hour with overtime after 40hrs

Schedule

When vessels are in port flexibility is a must. Must be available nights and weekends when required. Vessel shift is 7AM to 10PM. (will not be needed entire shift). Operations Manager will assign schedule on a per vessel basis based on equipment needs.

When vessels are not in port Mon-Fri 8am to 5pm.
