Building Maintenance, Maintenance Technician / Mechanic
Location: New York
This shift is Monday - Friday 10:00 pm to 6:00 am.
OverviewAn employee in this class performs a variety of semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance and repair of public facilities and properties. The incumbent assists higher‑level maintenance mechanics and works in craft areas such as plumbing, masonry, carpentry, electricity, welding, machine operations, bridge maintenance, and equipment maintenance. Incumbents are expected to exhibit initiative and judgment in typical work situations and are frequently employed in small teams or individually.
Responsibilities- Assist a maintenance mechanic of a higher classification in servicing and repairing machinery and equipment such as electric motors, pumps, meters, compressors, and chainsaws; clean, oil and grease machinery.
- Perform unskilled and semi‑skilled work assisting higher level maintenance mechanics; perform rough work in the craft areas; clean work area after completion of the job.
- Assist in the installation of water and sewer service lines, meter pits, water meters, curb stops, water and sewer mains, water supply lines, valves, fittings, and hydrants; may also read water meters.
- Perform a variety of minor maintenance work in public buildings, including clearing stopped drains, changing electrical switches, repairing door locks, replacing floor and wall tiles, and assisting in the repair and replacement of window panes, door frames, shelves and cabinets.
- Assist in the installation of catch basins, drainage pipes, sidewalks and curbs along public roads; mix cement and perform rough cement work; lay pipe and join sections of pipe with brackets.
- Assist a higher level maintenance mechanic in the repair of heating and cooling equipment and clean boilers.
- Perform rough painting, semi‑skilled bridge maintenance work and set up ladders, scaffolding, barricades, sheeting, shoring, and bracing as directed.
- Operate a hand‑pushed paint‑striping machine to line parking lots and street crossings.
- Report unsafe or undesirable conditions to the supervisor and comply with inspections by higher‑level maintenance mechanics or supervisory personnel.
- Perform related work as required.
Working knowledge of tools and procedures used in building and mechanical trades; ability to use hand tools and common power tools used in maintenance and repair work; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; skill in the operation of hand tools; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
Minimum Qualifications- One (1) year of vocational education courses in a vocational school program, or in an apprentice or training program in one of the craft areas; or
- One (1) year of experience in minor maintenance or repair work; or
- A satisfactory equivalent combination of the above education or training and experience.
Depending on the nature of the assignment, candidates may be required to possess a valid New York State driver’s license appropriate for the vehicle to be operated.
Hiring Salary- Starting annual salary is $36,096 (Grade 12) as per the Association of Municipal Employees (AME) contract.
- Position is eligible for medical benefits as offered by the College.
- Salary is in accordance with Suffolk County civil service and AME contract and is non‑negotiable.
