Overview
Join to apply for the Operations & Maintenance Technician role at IHI Power Services Corp.. This is an onsite role with no remote work. The plant is in the Bayswater neighborhood of Far Rockaway, Queens NY, 11691. Some travel to training sites within NYC may be assigned, but travel outside the region is not expected.
Job SummaryO&M Technicians primarily operate and maintain a electric generating plant which consists of two Pratt and Whitney FT-8 swift-pac generating units rated MW each, two 13.8/69 kV transformers, auxiliary electrical switch gear, two natural gas compressors, two air compressors, bulk liquid fuel oil storage, water processing equipment, and fire protection systems. The O&M techs perform operator rounds and electrical/mechanical repairs & maintenance.
The O&M technicians can expect to operate fork trucks and other mobile equipment to move material around the plant. O&M Techs need to be able to perform administrative tasks that pertain to logging events and controlling LOTO records.
- Operate and maintain the plant and its equipment as part of routine rounds and repairs.
- Perform administrative tasks related to logging events and LOTO records.
- Education and Experience:
An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience will be considered. 3+ years of experience with trade school, relevant military training, or other technical training to be considered in lieu of experience. Must be able to read and write in English and communicate in English on phone calls and in face-to-face conversations. - Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Mechanical skills (lubrication of pumps/motors/valves, changing belts and couplings, packing valves, replacing filters, compression tube fitting, threading pipe, ability to read one-line mechanical drawings);
Electrical skills (use of a multimeter, testing fuses, checking continuity, reading one-line electrical prints, breaker racking experience);
Knowledge of industrial control systems; ability to calibrate instruments. - Documentation and Safety: OSHA 10, Safe use of forklift/manlift/JLG/scissor lift, NFPA 70E, Scaffold safety, HAZWOPER 24, Incident command system knowledge, First Aid/CPR/AED.
- Valid driver’s license is required.
- FDNY Certificates of fitness within 180 days of employment (A-35, C-91, C-92, C-91, F-01, G-29, G-46, P-13, S-12, S-15, S-95).
- Schedule:
After site familiarization training (about 2 months), the position transitions to a rotating shift schedule with 12-hour shifts; weekends, nights, and holidays are part of the normal rotation. - Shifts typically run 6am-6pm or 6pm-6am; the role is a lone worker on nights, holidays, and weekends.
- Union affiliation:
The O&M technician becomes a probationary member of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 30 after hire; probation ends after 180 days.
- Ability to work indoors and outdoors in high noise and/or extreme temperatures; proximity to high voltage and rotating equipment; able to work in cramped conditions; occasional heavy lifting (up to 75 pounds).
- Must be able to wear required safety gear (respirator, hard hat, hearing and eye protection).
- Ability to safely operate a forklift and manlift;
Fitness for Duty program participation (post-offer physical, drug screening, and post-employment testing as applicable).
