Location: New York
Trades Specialist (Plumber Steamfitter)
Position located within the Facilities Department at the University at Buffalo.
Responsibilities- Install plumbing systems and new fixture installation.
- Plan and layout piping systems and new fixture installation.
- Repair plumbing and steam systems including troubleshooting heating systems and equipment.
- Work with other plumber/steamfitters as well as semi‑skilled and unskilled employees in small group projects.
- Read blueprints, plan, and layout work procedures to make repairs and plan new installations or alterations to existing installations of high and low pressure pipe systems that carry water, steam, air or other liquids or gases.
- Collect the relevant information to estimate labor and material requirements for routine work and projects.
- Diagnose malfunctions in fixtures or equipment and use appropriate test equipment such as pressure and vacuum gauges to determine cause and location of trouble.
- Support the growing plumbing, HVAC, and sprinkler system maintenance needs of the campus community.
- Lead a group of maintenance assistants and maintenance helpers.
- Repair, maintain, and install plumbing fixtures and appliances such as sinks, shower baths, commodes, drinking fountains, gas and water meters, gas hot water heaters and other appliances and heating systems.
- Four years of full‑time experience in plumbing under a skilled tradesperson; or an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of technical courses in plumbing at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services; or successful completion of the two‑year Trades Specialist (Plumber & Steamfitter) traineeship or a two‑year plumbing training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program.
- Must have a working knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the plumbing and steam fitting trade and understand and apply plumbing codes.
- EPA Universal Certification
- Fall Arrest training
- Confined Space Training
- Lock‑out/Tag‑out training
- NYSDOH Backflow testing Certification

Physical DemandsMust be physically able to perform all the duties of this position as outlined in the Position Summary. Bending, twisting, ability to move/transport 50 pounds, ascend/descend ladders, access equipment located on mezzanines, catwalks, basements and crawlspaces. Ability to work off ladders, scaffolding, in confined spaces and/or where air monitoring may be required. Work in loud/noisy dusty/dirty environments. Work with or around high‑pressure steam, high‑voltage electrical systems and rotating equipment.
