Compensation Range: $26/hr - $29/hr commensurate with experience.

Under the supervision of the Assistant Director for Facility, the HVAC Mechanic performs a variety of standard to moderately complex technical tasks related to installing, maintaining, and repairing heating, cooling, ventilation, and related systems. All work complies with building codes and agency policies. The primary goal is to provide a safe and adequate indoor air quality/working environment for clients and staff.
Responsibilities- Provide ongoing assessments of HVAC units, offering clear, detailed information to eliminate or correct problem areas.
- Install HVAC units, ductwork, refrigeration units, and associated electronic and mechanical components.
- Troubleshoot and repair HVAC units, fuel and water supply lines, and electrical connections to HVAC components.
- Conserve, install, and recycle CFC and HCFC refrigerants.
- Install or repair HVAC system automation components for businesses or "smart homes".
- Participate in staff meetings, training sessions, and advocacy/direct action to address the twin crises of AIDS and homelessness.
- Locate, pick up, and deliver parts required for equipment needs.
- Check and change air filters, condensers, and evaporators regularly.
- Report all incidents immediately to the site manager and supervisor.
- Carry tools and supplies; purchase goods as needed.
- Use public transportation to execute work orders when necessary.
- Ensure compliance with health code and NY OSHA workplace safety requirements.
- Recommend and implement energy-saving methods.
- Work overtime hours, including Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays.
- Lift and carry items weighing up to 100 lbs. regularly.
- Maintain on‑call availability 24/7.
- Build relationships with other Housing Works departments, demonstrating excellent teamwork.
- Listen to questions and concerns, evaluate issues, and provide solutions while ensuring staff receive necessary training and tools.
- Maintain a high level of professionalism, integrity, and communication.
- Provide excellent internal and external customer service, offering direct and non‑punishing communication.
- Participate in advocacy and direct action to end the twin crisis of homelessness and HIV/AIDS.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Five (5) years + experience in the HVAC field.
- Technical training or work experience in one or more building trade skill sets such as electrical, plumbing, and general construction.
- Working knowledge of equipment installation and repair.
- Good organizational, interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
- Basic computer skills.
This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement with the Retail Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU).
