Location: New York
Overview
This position is skilled repetitive manual labor work involving responsibility for efficiently making plumbing installations and performing maintenance work on the city water system. Work is performed under the immediate supervision of the Caulker Supervisor and directions are received as to work to be performed. No supervision is exercised over employees.
Responsibilities- Installs, checks, relocates and reconditions valves, valve boxes, hydrants, water mains and special fittings;
- checks service lines;
- Installs taps on water mains;
- Operates distribution system valves to segregate areas affected by water main breaks and makes repairs to restore water service;
- Makes excavations and backfills;
- Assists in the operation of jackhammer and soil tamper machines;
- Pours lead and caulks joints to make repairs to existing cast iron water mains;
- Installs mechanical pipe fittings for repair or new pipe installations;
- Shuts off and turns on water pumps;
- Maintains tools, supplies and equipment relative to water distribution repairs;
- Drives repair truck to and from job sites;
- may perform preventive maintenance to vehicles;
- periodically cleans assigned repair crew truck and appurtenances;
- Performs related work as required.
- Promotional applicants must have continuous and permanent status as a Water Service Worker for one year.
- Open Competitive applicants must have one year of full-time experience in the installation or maintenance work involving water mains and/or service lines.
Special Requirement for both Promotional and Open Competitive
Applicants must possess and present a current Class B New York State Commercial Driver's License within six months of date of appointment and maintained during length of employment.
- Good knowledge of the tools, equipment and terminology relating to the maintenance of a water distribution system;
- Ability to pour lead and caulk joints as required;
- Ability to perform heavy labor for extended periods of time;
- Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions;
- Ability to work under adverse weather conditions;
- Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
