The Brookhaven National Laboratory’s Energy & Utilities Division is seeking a Steamfitter (Heating Maintenance Technician) to join the team. The role involves the installation, repair, and maintenance of steam, hot water, and heating systems on site. Shift: Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (overtime required). Reports to the Steam Shop Supervisor.

• Perform routine and corrective maintenance to keep the steam distribution system operating at optimal efficiency.
• Identify potential hazards, environmental concerns, and unsafe conditions or practices and implement controls to minimize risk.
• Maintain low horsepower fuel‑fired industrial boilers and burners.
• Operate equipment safely, following safety rules and procedures, and actively participate in safety programs (e.g., confined space, lock‑out/tag‑out).
• Monitor and recognize abnormal conditions to take corrective action.
• Assist in maintaining a high level of housekeeping, inventory, and maintenance of tools.

High School or GED. Experience options:

• 6 years total related experience: 4 years apprenticeship + 2 years experience.
• 6–8 years total related experience: formal trade school + minimum 2 years experience.
• 8 years related experience (no formal training).

• Knowledge of underground high and low pressure saturated steam distribution systems, condensate return systems, and various steam heating systems.
• Some working knowledge of pump maintenance and repairs.
• Good written and verbal communication skills, including following written instruction procedures and completing work orders.
• Must have a telephone for BNL call‑out and contact purposes.
• Must complete the Job Training Assessment.
• Valid NYS driver’s license.

• Plumbing experience.
• Oil burner maintenance and repair experience.
• Experience troubleshooting and repairing equipment such as steam traps, steam stations, pressure‑reducing valves, and control valves.
• Knowledge of hot water heating systems, heat exchangers, piping, and chemical treatment systems.
• Basic knowledge of industrial electrical and control systems.
• Knowledge of lock‑out/tag‑out procedures.

• Meet medical requirements for the position.
• Standing, bending, and lifting up to 40 lbs.
• Work in confined spaces and active steam manholes.
• Work in excavations and at heights greater than 5 ft.
• Use respirator and related safety equipment.
• Work outdoors in cold and warm environments.
• Some rigging and hoisting.
• Use aerial lifts and trucks.
• Use power and air‑operated hand tools.
• Operate machinery including benchtop grinders.
• Act as primary authorized employee for complex lock‑out/tag‑out.
• Wear proper PPE: safety glasses, safety shoes, hearing protection.

Starting salary: $42.41 per hour.
