Job Description:
The SNAP Specialist will conduct outreach and provide direct assistance for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as the Food Stamp Program, with a focus on underserved communities in Boro Park. This role involves client education, eligibility screening, and guided enrollment support to help households access essential food benefits. This is a fully on-site position based primarily in Boro Park, Brooklyn.
Responsibilities- Outreach & Client Engagement
- Conduct outreach to community-based organizations, emergency food programs, and partner agencies.
- Educate potential applicants on SNAP rules, requirements, and eligibility criteria.
- Attend community outreach events, fairs, and forums (occasional nontraditional hours).
- Application Assistance & Case Management
- Screen and advise clients on documentation and eligibility requirements.
- Provide guidance and hands-on assistance with applications using online tools (e.g., Access HRA).
- Assist with recertifications, case updates, and follow-up with existing clients.
- Provide advocacy for clients with disputed cases.
- Connect clients to additional low-income programs (Fair Fares, HEAP, NYC Care, WIC, health insurance, free tax prep services, etc.).
- Collaboration & Documentation
- Work closely with partner agencies and internal teams.
- Document all services in Salesforce and other tracking systems.
- Perform additional responsibilities as assigned.
- Excellent communication and customer service skills
- Strong comfort with online technologies and database systems
- Ability to conduct benefits screenings, especially SNAP
- Effective public speaking and presentation skills
- High attention to detail and accuracy
- Ability to help clients navigate barriers while following applicable regulations
- Professional, patient, and culturally sensitive approach
- Strong reliability and punctuality, especially due to direct client services
- High School Diploma required;
Bachelor’s degree preferred - Background in Public Health, Public Administration, or Human Services
- Extensive experience working with the Orthodox Jewish community (required)
- Additional languages—especially Spanish or Russian—strongly preferred
- Knowledge of government benefits is a plus
- Must be willing to travel throughout the five boroughs of NYC
- Primary work location is in Boro Park, with additional sites assigned as needed
