O4 - Transit System Based Outreach Specialist - Transit
Shift: Sunday-Thursday 10:30pm-7am
Responsibilities- Provide direct outreach, vulnerability screening, escort, and referral services for homeless individuals encountered during the shift.
- Record and maintain accurate statistical data on all individuals approached and referred, and manage case records for clients receiving long‑term services.
- Recognize signs and symptoms of mental health and substance abuse issues and develop a working knowledge of available services.
- Conduct the majority of outreach at end‑of‑line stations, collaborating with external agencies; perform related duties as assigned.
Full‑time, 37.5 hours per week
Qualifications- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree required; equivalent experience considered.
- Minimum 6 months continuous employment with BRC in comparable positions (Community Technician, Program Aide, etc.).
- Strong interest in working with homeless, mentally ill, and substance‑abusing populations.
- Valid state driver’s license.
- Good writing skills for client interaction documentation.
- Basic computer literacy.
- First Aid/CPR certification required or ability to obtain.
- Spanish language skills desirable.
Jointly funded by the Department of Homeless Services and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, BRC’s Transit Homeless Outreach staff operate throughout the transit system 24 hours a day. The program, operating since 2005, provides outreach and case management to help homeless individuals relocate from MTA properties and connect them with housing and essential services across Manhattan, The Bronx, Brooklyn, and Queens.
