Overview
The New York City Department of Homeless Services (DHS) is the largest organization in the United States dedicated to preventing and addressing homelessness. DHS works with other City agencies and nonprofit organizations to prevent homelessness before it begins, reduce street homelessness, provide temporary shelter, and connect individuals and families to stable housing with a focus on accountability, empathy, and equity.
Responsibilities- Interact with community stakeholders to keep residents informed of DHS programs and services for the homeless population. Interview families, issue social service referrals, attend onsite/offsite community meetings, and offer insight for improvement.
- Maintain liaison with community shelters to convey placement information and facilitate transportation to shelters. Assist the Community Coordinator with handling onsite/offsite client inquiries with confidentiality and sensitivity during the application process.
- Record all client information and social service referrals utilizing the online CARES and Q-Flow, accurately input codes, register applicants for temporary housing, and convey placement information and transportation.
- Perform high-level clerical duties assigned by the Site Manager, such as preparing written monthly, quarterly, and annual administrative statistical and narrative indicator reports; collect, analyze, evaluate on‑site and statistical data; coordinate and prepare case files and documents; and maintain files for future reference.
- High school graduation or equivalent and at least three years of experience in community work or related community‑centered activities.
- Equivalent education and/or experience other than the above requirements.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Attention to detail, team player, and self‑motivated.
- Computer proficiency and courteous telephone manner.
