the Opportunity

We’re looking for an Engineering Manager on the Merchant engineering team who will own and build data pipelines and tooling to support Merchant identification and targeting as well as all merchant‑facing reporting and analytics. This is an opportunity to shape the future of the merchant supply on the Grubhub platform and help merchants grow their businesses once partnered.

You will be responsible for a team that will define, architect, build, maintain and scale new and innovative features for our merchants. Our Engineering Managers wear a lot of hats – you work with other technology teams, product managers and business stakeholders to build complex and impactful solutions.

The Impact You Will Make
  • Lead, inspire and grow a team of data scientists tasked with researching, prototyping and building statistical or machine learning models and leveraging emerging AI technologies when appropriate.
  • Craft a meaningful vision for the team, working with product managers and other multi‑location technology teams to create roadmaps, lead architecture vision and collaborate on cross‑functional initiatives. Guide the team as you build out features that enable the best merchants on our platform.
  • Run your team’s agile ceremonies. Positively influence the planning, refinement and execution of your team’s goals in a rapid development environment.
  • Build a diverse team while fostering a collaborative and inclusive environment.
  • Build and utilize metrics to analyze features as they are deployed to production to ensure they are functioning as expected and properly alerting when necessary.
  • Contribute to the adoption of strong software architecture, development best practices, and new technologies.
What You Bring to the Table
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Science, Programming or Engineering related field or equivalent practical experience.
  • 6+ years software engineering experience including 2+ years of management experience.
  • Experience managing a team of engineers and providing mentorship and coaching on career growth.
  • Strong proficiency in Python, Azkaban and Apache Spark. Java, Kotlin and microservice architecture experience is helpful.
  • Strong understanding of AWS offerings like S3, EC2 and Lambdas.
  • Experience with Starburst clusters is a plus.
  • Ability to debug production issues with observability and logging tools.
  • Pattern of building, owning, and maintaining scalable and reusable services, features and components.
  • Experience prioritizing and improving test coverage while designing for testability.
  • Track record of advocating for the adoption of strong software architecture, development best practices, and new technologies.
  • Experience being self‑directed and responsible for deliverables.
  • Familiar with Agile methodologies.
  • You will work with your team to monitor and ensure the health of the platform, which includes a 24/7 on‑call rotation, to ensure a great customer experience.
