About the roleForkey Fabrication is a contract manufacturing company located in Cortland, NY. We are building our own internal product,
Kit Boss
, a Python/Django web-based manufacturing execution system. It integrates with our ERP and serves both office staff and tablet users on site.
We're hiring a mid-level software developer to develop and support Kit Boss. You'll build new modules and features, improve the existing platform, and keep it reliable in production.
This is a hands-on role with real ownership. You'll work directly with the people who use what you build, see your work in use soon after it ships, and help shape the product's direction. Small team with short feedback loops.
Key Responsibilities- Kit Boss development: Design, build and ship new Kit Boss modules and features end to end, from data models and back-end logic to user interfaces.
- System design: Design application architecture and data models that scale with growing usage, using caching, background job queues and sound concurrency handling.
- API & integration: Design, develop and maintain secure RESTful APIs and data integrations with the ERP and other business systems.
- Database management: Optimize database schemas, write complex SQL queries, and manage data persistence with the Django ORM on Microsoft SQL Server.
- Security & auth: Implement and maintain authentication, role-based authorization and secure handling of business data.
- Testing automation: Write thorough unit, integration and regression test suites to keep code quality high.
- CI/CD & deployment: Maintain automated build and deployment pipelines; ship releases from staging to production, including database migrations.
- Performance tuning: Troubleshoot, debug and optimize application performance, slow queries and background-job throughput.
- Production support: Monitor Kit Boss in production, resolve issues, support users, and write technical and user documentation.
- Experience: 3-5 years of professional software development, building and supporting production web applications.
- Core Python: Strong knowledge of Python 3.10+, including idiomatic, maintainable code and familiarity with async programming (asyncio).
- Python web frameworks: Hands-on experience with Django (preferred), FastAPI or Flask.
- Databases: Strong proficiency in relational databases (SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MySQL) and ORM tools (Django ORM, SQL Alchemy).
- API design: Proven experience designing clean RESTful web services and integrating with third-party systems.
- System design: Working knowledge of caching strategies, background job processing, concurrency and designing for scalability and reliability.
- Data structures & algorithms: A solid foundation in data structures and algorithms, used to write efficient code.
- Version control: Strong Git skills: branching, merging, pull requests and code review.
- Communication: Explains technical trade-offs clearly to non-technical colleagues and works directly with users.
Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or a related field, or equivalent experience.
Preferred skills- Deploying and running Python applications on Windows Server / IIS behind a reverse proxy.
- Containers and cloud platforms (Docker, Azure or AWS).
- Background job frameworks (Django-Q, Celery, RQ).
- CI/CD pipelines (Git Hub Actions or similar).
- Experience with ERP or other line-of-business systems.
- Data analysis or optimization libraries (pandas, OR-Tools).
- Using AI coding assistants responsibly: reviewing and testing what they produce.
