Lifeguard – Convent of the Sacred Heart, 91st Street, New York, NY

Job Summary

This part‑time, year‑round position requires vigilance and care for the safety of a 6‑lane, 25‑yard pool, the surrounding deck, and adjacent locker rooms. The lifeguard will work all shifts—morning, afternoon, and evening—and may be assigned to any pool shift ranging from 1:30 pm to 9:00 pm on Wednesdays and Thursdays. The position is located in a 55,000 SF Athletics and Wellness Center at 406 East 91st Street and reports directly to the Aquatics Director.

Job Functions
  • Ensure the safety of the pool and surrounding areas.
  • Maintain vigilance and alertness throughout all shifts.
  • Respond promptly to any incident or emergency in the pool area, including locker rooms.
  • Enforce pool rules for all clients and programs.
  • Keep the pool deck and surrounding areas clean and organized.
  • Coordinate with security staff for effective communication and emergency response.
  • Perform general duties as directed by the Aquatics Director.
  • Assist in the development, marketing, and management of the Cardinal Swim Program.
  • Check lifeguard equipment regularly and notify the Aquatics Director of any safety issues.
  • Interact with internal and external stakeholders daily for program development, management, and maintenance.
  • Represent the Convent of the Sacred Heart and its mission to all patrons.
Qualifications
  • Certified Professional Rescuer with up‑to‑date CPR, First Aid, and AED training.
  • Physical ability to perform routine pool duties, including lifting and moving pool lines, lifeguard stands, touch pads, and other equipment.
  • Experience working with youth and/or in aquatics environments.
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Record of integrity, reliability, and punctuality.
  • Willingness to assist with additional responsibilities as directed by the Aquatics Director or Division Head of Athletics & Wellness.
  • Excellent customer service skills—energetic, enthusiastic, and motivational.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build relationships with patrons of all ages.
  • Comfortable working with very young children and all age groups.
  • Demonstrated patience and empathy.
  • Ability to handle and resolve conflicts professionally and tactfully.
  • Capability to work independently and make quick decisions.
  • Flexibility with work hours.
Compensation
  • Hourly rates from $20/hour to $24/hour, commensurate with experience.
  • Certification and renewal courses offered free of charge to employees.
