Work Schedule

Mon‑Fri, 40 hours per week; 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM. Mandatory overtime. No flextime. No telecommuting.

Responsibilities
  • Respond to emergency callout within 1 hour during inclement weather (including all snow and ice conditions).
  • Perform routine manual tasks requiring medium to heavy physical effort and exposure to all weather conditions.
  • Operate plows during winter operations and obtain the required equipment certifications.
  • Serve a role within the Incident Command System to support the department’s response to regional and statewide emergency situations.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Highway Maintenance Worker Trainee 1
    • Must be 18 years old, pass a physical/medical examination and drug test*, and possess a Class D Driver License.
  • Highway Maintenance Worker Trainee 2
    • Must be 18 years old, pass a physical/medical examination
      * and drug test, and possess a Class A or B Commercial Driver License with no air‑brake restriction.
    • Candidates will be evaluated on their ability to satisfactorily operate a NYSDOT large dump truck within two weeks of appointment. Failure to pass will result in termination.
  • Highway Maintenance Worker 1
    • Satisfactory completion of the Highway Maintenance Worker Traineeship 2 or one year of experience in the operation of highway construction or maintenance equipment, or other vehicles in excess of 26,000 gross vehicle weight rating with air brakes, and possession of a Class A or B Commercial Driver License with DOT‑specified endorsements.
    • Two NYSDOT equipment operation certifications, plus three specific certifications: heavy dump truck, one‑person plowing with single or double wing, and front‑end loader.
  • Within the first two weeks of employment, the applicant must satisfactorily complete NYSDOT Heavy Dump Certification, or employment will be terminated.
  • All candidates must pass a pre‑employment physical/medical examination
    * and drug test prior to beginning employment. Cannabis use is not permitted; it will be tested for during the pre‑employment screening process and may be the basis for disqualification or removal from employment.
  • Eligible candidates who meet both of the following may be exempt from the pre‑employment physical: A valid CDL A or B and a current (less than 2 years old) CDL Medical Certificate (form MCSA 5876) that meets specific criteria discussed at the time of interview.

Starting salaries:

• Highway Maintenance Worker Trainee 1 – $51,336.00 (base $42,336.00 + geographic $9,000.00).

• Highway Maintenance Worker Trainee 2 – $53,475.00 (base $44,475.00 + geographic $9,000.00).

• Highway Maintenance Worker 1 – $55,780.00 (base $46,780.00 + geographic $9,000.00).
