Base pay range$48,855.00/yr - $58,743.00/yr
Duties Description- Respond to emergency callouts within 1 hour during inclement weather, including all snow and ice conditions.
- Perform routine manual tasks requiring medium to heavy physical effort, exposed to all kinds of weather conditions.
- Operate plows during winter operations and obtain the equipment certifications listed above.
- Serve a role within the Incident Command System to support the department’s response to regional and statewide emergency situations.
- Must be 18 years old, pass physical/medical examination and drug test*, and possess a Class D Driver License.

* and drug test; and possess a Class A or B Commercial Driver License with no airbrake restriction. - Must pass the ability to satisfactorily operate a NYSDOT large dump truck within two weeks of appointment; failure to pass will result in termination.
- Satisfactory completion of the Highway Maintenance Worker’s Traineeship 2 or one year of experience in the operation of highway construction, maintenance equipment, or other vehicles in excess of 26,000 Gross Vehicle Weight Rating with air brakes and possession of a Class A or B Commercial Driver License with DOT‑specified endorsements.
- Two NYSDOT equipment operation certifications and the following three specific certifications: heavy dump truck, one‑person plowing with single or double wing, and front‑end loader.
- Within the first two weeks of employment, applicant must satisfactorily complete NYSDOT Heavy Dump Certification; otherwise employment will be terminated.
NOTE:
All candidates must pass a pre‑employment physical/medical examination
* and drug test prior to beginning employment. Cannabis use is not permitted for employees in this title and assignment.
- Candidates who meet both of the following MAY be eligible to bypass the pre‑employment physical: a valid CDL A or B AND a current (less than 2 years old) CDL Medical Certificate (form MCSA 5876) that meets specific criteria discussed at the time of interview.
The starting salary for the Highway Maintenance Worker Trainee 1 is $48,855, composed of a base salary of $39,855 with a geographic pay differential of $9,000.
The starting salary for the Highway Maintenance Worker Trainee 2 is $51,058, composed of a base salary of $42,058 with a geographic pay differential of $9,000.
The starting salary for the Highway Maintenance Worker 1 is $53,430, composed of a base salary of $44,430 with a geographic pay differential of $9,000.
