Base pay range

$80,630.00/yr - $/yr

Primary

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Product focused materials R&D:
    Optimize existing materials, develop new materials, product ionize successful development projects
  • Lead materials characterization activities for Delaware site
  • Participate in prototyping activities in line with 5‑year plan, including planning and scheduling, documentation, customer interface, supplier interface, and hands‑on activities
  • Participate in Lean/Kaizen events with goals of increasing efficiency, enhancing quality and improving output
  • Participate in ISO activities for R&D group
  • Maintain a focus outside of Coherent to keep track of innovations in the field (e.g., external literature, external conferences, use of AI searches)
Education & Experience
  • PhD degree in Materials Engineering or related fields with 5+ years of industrial experience highly preferred. Combination of schooling and relevant experience can be considered.
  • Demonstrated experience with publishing technical papers, presenting at technical conferences and/or patent preparation a strong plus.
  • Interact with customers to set acceptable material requirements and characterization standards.
Skills
  • Strong background in materials R&D field, with focus on ceramics, metals, and coatings
  • Experience with materials manufacturing equipment, including vacuum furnaces, alternate atmosphere kilns, mixers, presses, alloy melters, and molders
  • Experience with materials characterization equipment, including optical microscopes, SEMs, X‑ray diffraction, ICP, GDMS, universal testing machines, etc.
  • Experience with powder characterization equipment, including particle size analyzers and tap pack density machines
  • Working knowledge of data analysis tools (SPC, Mini Tab and DoE)
  • Experience with problem solving and resolution (8D, fishbone, etc.)
  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team and leading lower level engineers and technicians
  • Hands‑on and very direct approach to problem solving
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Experience with networked PC based computer system (MS Office, spreadsheets, data bases, graphics, Email, etc.)

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to occasionally lift/push/pull up to 20 lbs
  • Able to sit, stand, bend, squat and walk about the facility
  • Walk of uneven and slippery surfaces
Safety Requirements

All employees are required to attend scheduled training, follow the site EHS procedures and Corporate EHS standards. This includes the use of proper protective equipment (PPE) as required by the job responsibilities. Managers will ensure that all safety and environmental procedures are followed consistently. They will ensure that risk assessments are performed, proper training, work instructions, required PPE is available, and will monitor compliance.
