Job Details:
Current registered nursing students may apply for the Summer 2026 Year-Round (Beginning of June Start Date) and Summer Only (Week of May 25th) Student Nurse Extern Position. Final date to receive applications:
February 19th at 11:59pm
. Position is for all campuses in the Christiana Care system.

Principle Duties and Responsibilities:

The nurse extern will demonstrate skills and knowledge vital to deliver care appropriate to a diverse patient population, including knowledge of growth and development, the ability to acquire information to identify patient needs, and to provide the appropriate care needed. The student nurse will perform crucial unit-specific tasks such as:

• Communicating to patients, families, employees, and physicians utilizing both verbal and written communication skills.
• Responding to patient needs with promptness, initiating interventions within scope of responsibility and collaborating with RN.
• Performing assigned work safely, adhering to established departmental safety rules and practices; reporting unsafe activities, conditions, hazards, or safety violations.
• Knowledge of nursing care provided for specific patient population of unit, as well as department and unit standards, policies, and selected procedures.
• Ability to recognize changes in patient status and take appropriate action.
• Utilizing required technical skills and following universal precautions.
• Exercising judgement, tact and diplomacy.

Education and Experience Requirements:

• High school diploma/GED required or International Education Evaluation from a Christiana Care approved vendor.
• Current enrollment in an accredited registered nursing program preparing the candidate to sit for the NCLEX-RN.
• GPA of 3.0 or higher (preferred).
• One completed “in-person/ hands-on” clinical rotation by the start of the program.
• Availability to attend the mandatory classroom training portion.
• Current BLS required.

Year-Round Student Nurse Extern Position Requirements:

• Starts beginning of June 2026.
• Work throughout the year.
• Work ONE 8-hour shift weekly or 16 hours bi-weekly (externs can work more).
• One weekend every 4 weeks.
• Holiday work requirement.

Summer Only
- Student Nurse Extern Position (Newark and/or Wilmington Only):

• Starts week of May 25th, 2026.
• Must be graduating between December 2026 and May 2027.
• Must work a minimum of 36 hours a week for an 11-week program during Summer 2026.
• This position will be under the Float Pool Manager, and you will be placed based on hospital needs.

This is a flat rate position; any individual hired will be paid $19.82/hr plus any applicable differentials.

The pay rate/range represents Christiana Care’s good faith and reasonable estimate of compensation at the time of posting. The actual salary within this range offered to a successful candidate will depend on individual factors including skills, relevant experience, and qualifications as they relate to specific job requirements.
