The Senior Metrology Technician supports engineering activities through dimensional inspection of fabricated components, development and execution of inspection programs, Inspection Method Validation or Measurement System Analysis (MSA) and inspection equipment selection. This role works from engineering drawings, specifications, and verbal or written instructions to perform precise measurements and inspections, collect dimensional data, and support product development and manufacturing activities.
The Senior Metrology Technician assists in determining appropriate inspection methods and measurement strategies for incoming inspection in a production environment. This includes:
- Determination of measurement equipment suitability based on the part and feature to be inspected. Fabricated parts include custom machined, cast, injection molded, sheet metal, assemblies, and off-the-shelf components.
- Inspection method development – including Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMMs), portable CMM arms, laser scanning systems, Keyence vision systems, optical comparators, and conventional handheld measurement tools and gauges.
- Measurement system validation to show capability
- Creating written instructions of inspection methods used by incoming inspection
This individual works on assignments of moderate complexity, exercising sound judgment in resolving technical issues and making recommendations. The successful candidate possesses a strong understanding of metrology principles and independently performs a broad range of inspection and measurement activities while collaborating closely with engineers and technicians across the organization.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:The incumbent may be asked to perform other function-related activities in addition to the responsibilities listed below, as reasonably required by business needs.
- Collaborate closely with engineers and engineering technicians to collect, analyze, and document dimensional inspection data.
- Develop, validate, and maintain inspection programs using PC-DMIS and associated metrology software.
- Operate Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMMs), portable CMM arms, laser scanners, Keyence vision systems, optical comparators, and conventional measurement equipment.
- Read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) requirements.
- Design and implement fixture solutions to support accurate and repeatable inspections.
- Develop and execute inspection procedures and measurement plans.
- Identify, diagnose, prioritize, and resolve technical inspection and measurement issues while partnering with cross-functional teams as needed.
- Conduct inspection studies, measurement system analyses (MSA), and capability assessments to support engineering and quality objectives.
- Create, maintain, and improve Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), work instructions, and related documentation.
- Actively support and comply with the Quality Policy and Quality Management System procedures.
- Build collaborative relationships with engineering, quality, manufacturing, and other site stakeholders.
- Recommend process improvements, measurement enhancements, and efficiency opportunities based on direct observations and technical expertise.
- Support prototype, verification, validation, and product development activities through accurate and timely measurement services.
- Provide improvement ideas based on direct observations.
Education
- Preferred Minimum Non-Technical Degree:
High School (H.S./GED) or Associate Degree
- Preferred Minimum Non-Technical Degree: 2-4 Years
- Experience with PC-DMIS is required
- Advanced knowledge of MS Office
- Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal skills
- Excellent organizational and time management skills
- Advanced ability to read, and interpret engineering drawings.
The annualized base salary range for this role is $97,600 - $152,700 and is bonus eligible. Final compensation packages will ultimately depend on factors including relevant experience, skillset, knowledge, geography, education, business needs, and market demand.
