Position Summary

The Newark College of Engineering (NCE) at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) invites applications and nominations for the position of Professor of Robotics Engineering. We are seeking candidates at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor on a tenure track. The successful candidate will be appointed in the department within NCE that aligns best with the candidate’s expertise, and may hold a joint appointment across multiple departments as appropriate.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate a record of outstanding scholarship, experience in research and development of robotic systems, and knowledge and interest in the underlying theory and practice of robotics design. We are also seeking candidates with genuine interest in education, ready and excited about guiding students to develop, build, and test robots as part of the students’ academic training.

The successful candidate is expected to work effectively in a collaborative, interdisciplinary environment both within NCE and across the broader campus.

Essential Functions
  • Teaches, conducts research, and develops technology related to contemporary robots.
  • Supports and leads the design, testing, and operation of robotic systems.
  • Solicits and secures research funding (and support for robotic infrastructure) from governmental bodies and industry.
  • Initiates and leads research projects; publishes results in peer-reviewed journals and presents findings at leading conferences on robotics and related areas.
  • Delivers lectures, workshops, design courses, and research projects in robotics and related areas.
  • Mentors student groups that participate in robotics competitions.
  • Develops and adapts new teaching methods, tools, and curricula based on the latest research in robotics and robotics education.
  • Leads the design and development of state-of-the-art infrastructure for robotic research and experimentation at NJIT.
  • Collaborates with other professionals, academic researchers, and organizations focused on robotics and related fields.
Prerequisite Qualifications
  • Educational background in robotics or closely related areas; a record of outstanding research in a pertinent area is required, along with a footprint in the technical literature commensurate with the candidate’s rank and length of experience.
  • Participation in the design, building, and testing of relevant physical systems (e.g., robots, drones, AUVs).
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching, with a commitment to high-quality instruction and a desire to advance education programs in robotics engineering at both undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • Superior communication skills and excellent writing capabilities.
  • A doctorate degree in a pertinent STEM field is required by the appointment start date. Candidates with substantial academic training in robotics (design, hands‑on construction, and testing) are preferred.
  • Participation actively in major conferences on robotics is desirable.
  • At the university’s discretion, the education and experience prerequisites may be exempted if the candidate demonstrates to the satisfaction of the university an equivalent combination of education and experience specifically preparing the candidate for success in the position.
