.
- Appropriate New Jersey Department of Education Standard Certificate or eligible for an Emergency certificate as deemed necessary by https://(Use the "Apply for this Job" box below)./
- NJ Educational Services Certificate with a sign language interpreting endorsement
- EIPA Certification with a score of 3.0 or higher
- Completion of the Educational Interpreter Training Classes including:
- Ethics and Laws for Educational Interpreters
- Methods of Instruction & Curriculum Development
- Deaf‑Blind interpreting for Educational Interpreters
- Language Development for Educational Interpreters
- Associate Degree or higher from an accredited college or university (performance route certification also considered)
- Ability to work effectively with parents, students, administrators and teachers
- Ability to produce accessible language and understand child and adolescent signers
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Fluency in written and spoken English
- Fluency in ASL or the sign mode determined by the educational team
- Knowledge of language development for Deaf and hard‑of‑hearing children
- Ability to work well with individuals from diverse cultures
- Required criminal history background check and proof of U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status
- Interpret, transliterate and facilitate the integration of Deaf and hard‑of‑hearing students, providing access to the curriculum in a mode that reflects the student’s language use as outlined in the IEP.
- Provide simultaneous and consecutive interpretation services in a variety of situations.
- Assist classroom teachers in delivering an effective instructional program.
- Work with individual or small groups of hearing‑impaired students to reinforce learning of material or skills introduced by the teacher.
- Guide independent study, enrichment, and remedial work assigned by the teacher.
- Model social strategies to encourage interaction between sign‑language users and non‑users.
- For appropriately certified candidates, perform oral interpretation with clear mouth movements and repeated spoken messages when necessary.
- Interpret for individual or small groups in classrooms, field trips, and assembly programs.
- Assist the teacher of the deaf and supervisor of the auditory‑impairments program in identifying communication needs.
- Assist with the appropriate use and care of classroom amplification systems.
- Report malfunction or inappropriate use of equipment for repair or reinstruction.
- Assist students with hearing loss in mastering amplification technology and advocating for accommodations.
- Supervise students during emergency drills, assemblies, and field trips.
- Read and adhere to the Registry of Interpreter for the Deaf (RID) Code of Professional Conduct.
- Demonstrate ethical and professional behavior with students, parents, school personnel, and agencies.
- Protect confidentiality of records and information within legal confines.
- Enforce school rules, administrative regulations, and Board policies.
- Serve as a role model, maintaining professional dress and grooming.
- Provide technical assistance for workshops, seminars, and programs on Deaf and hard‑of‑hearing community needs.
- Participate in professional development to maintain certification.
- Provide interpreting services for staff members with hearing loss during designated staff development days.
- Perform other duties within the employment scope as assigned.
- Lifting items, sitting, standing, walking, speaking, hearing, using vision, reaching, and handling objects for required periods.
- Reasonable accommodations may be provided for individuals with disabilities.
- Exposure to childhood and adult diseases, various weather conditions, heated/air‑conditioned facilities, chemicals used for cleaning, and a generally moderate quiet environment that can be noisy at times.
