Uncommon High School History teachers work in department teams to push students towards being self‑guided learners. They become experts in course content and inspire high‑school students. History classes aim to empower students' voices and develop them into global citizens through textual analysis, analytical writing, and discourse. Students graduate ready for academic autonomy and college preparation.
Responsibilities- Teach a curriculum that prioritizes analysis of World, U.S. History, American Government, and Economics in preparation for Advanced Placement (AP) and collegiate coursework.
- Facilitate student‑led discourse of historical topics, guiding open‑ended questions, peer debate, and synthesis of arguments.
- Guide students in understanding author citations, sourcing power, and developing skills in argumentation, corroboration, inquiry, and historiography through primary and secondary source analysis.
- Create an inclusive and safe environment where students are empowered to express evidence‑based opinions.
- Collaborate with the History department to determine academic and engagement goals.
- Meet weekly with principal or instructional coach to analyze and respond to trends in student work and assessments.
- Learn and implement differentiation strategies for all learners.
- Build positive relationships with students, families, and community; partner to ensure resources for learning.
- Engage in professional development, mentorship, and coaching sessions.
- Participate in school‑wide meetings to cultivate community and model core values.
- Partner with grade‑level teams to develop academic goals and instructional strategies.
- Commitment to supporting students’ social‑emotional and academic development.
- Enthusiasm for collaborating with internal and external partners to benefit students.
- Self‑directed learner who seeks and applies feedback for improvement.
- Required Experience:
- Interest in impacting K‑12 students in urban schools (1‑2 years experience preferred).
- Academic expertise in Education, History, Geography, Political Science, Criminal Justice, Social Sciences, or the Humanities.
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. Teacher certification is not a prerequisite for consideration in New Jersey, but candidates must meet NJ state certification eligibility requirements and become certified within a reasonable period after beginning employment.

CompensationSalary range: $60,000 to $85,000.
