School Counselor - New Media High School SY2027-26 (NBOE)
We invite qualified individuals to apply for the School Counselor position at Newark Public Schools. This role is under the direction of the Human Resource Services and is pending availability of funds and Board of Education approval. The successful candidate will assist in planning, developing, and implementing guidance services to promote the growth and development of each student, counsel them individually on educational and career choices, personal and social concerns, and help plan long‑range educational goals.
Qualifications& Requirements
- An appropriate New Jersey Department of Education Standard Certificate or eligibility for an emergency license.
- Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university, unless otherwise specified.
- New Jersey Permanent Student Personnel Services Certificate.
- Three (3) years successful teaching or counseling experience, preferred.
- Letters of recommendation, including one from a current principal or supervisor.
- Conduct early screening to identify students with special needs, talents, or challenges and make referrals to appropriate services.
- Provide counseling to potential dropouts to identify alternative academic or social support options.
- Conduct interviews with students and families for referral preparation.
- Communicate with feeder schools, provide information on school offerings, and assist families in selecting an appropriate match.
- Support orientation activities for new students and parents throughout the school year.
- Prepare and maintain records and reports as required.
- Assist students in evaluating abilities and interests through tests, inventories, observations, consultations, and interviews.
- Assist enrollment staff in interpreting student records and test data; interpret that data for students and parents.
- Update and confirm student graduation eligibility following transcript review.
- Administer and interpret interest inventories and aptitude tests relating to educational and career planning; interpret achievement test results for students, parents, and staff.
- Inform students and parents about NPS graduation requirements.
- Complete transcript/graduation audits and inform students and parents of the outcome; consult with parents and administrators to improve student adjustment.
- Consult and cooperate with supportive services personnel for student and school‑wide goal development and intervention planning.
- Participate in conferences with the Student Support Team and Child Study Team.
- Cooperate with community agencies (Aspira, Essex County Welfare, Division of Youth and Family Services, New Jersey State Employment Services) to ensure continuity of services.
- Interview new students and recommend appropriate class placement.
- Review student transcripts to assess progress toward graduation and develop a plan for course completion.
- Participate in professional learning committees, workshops, in‑service trainings, and meetings to stay current with guidance and youth development trends.
- Perform other duties requested by the supervisor.
Principal
Salary, Employment Period and Union Affiliation- Salary Range: $70,000–$114,750

Ten (10) months - Union Affiliation: N.T.U. (Newark Teacher’s Union)
