A Grants Accountant oversees the financial administration of grants and contracts from award setup through award closeout, ensuring compliance with all Federal, State, University and sponsor policies, procedures, and guidelines. This position works closely with financial and administrative units throughout the university and provides training and support for sponsored research activities.
Responsibilities- Approve all sponsored transactions in accordance with award terms, Uniform Guidance, and institutional policy, including procurement, payroll, sub-awards, and travel.
- Provide routine training to Office of Research staff and other units on financial compliance issues related to sponsored research.
- Train new employees in post‑award management on NJIT policies, procedures, and systems.
- Prepare and submit interim and final financial reports for sponsors, including cost‑share reports, and analyze budgets, expenditures, encumbrances, and receivables.
- Verify accuracy of award setup, modifications, and budget information in Banner.
- Resolve accounting issues such as project overruns and accelerated spending.
- Track, manage, and validate cost‑share commitments.
- Prepare awards for closeout in accordance with sponsor terms.
- Provide support for audit activities involving sponsored awards.
- Perform other related duties and special projects as requested.
Prerequisite
Qualifications:
- At least 2 years of experience in post‑award research administration and/or grant accounting.
- Bachelor’s degree in business, research administration, or a related field.
- Excellent qualitative and quantitative skills.
- Experience in a college, university, or other non‑profit institution performing similar duties.
- Professional interaction with all levels of university personnel and external constituencies.
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
- Proficiency in Word and Excel (pivot tables, VLOOKUPs, etc.) or similar programs.
- Demonstrated success managing concurrent, high‑volume requests while providing superior customer service.
- Extensive knowledge of Uniform Guidance, effort reporting, cost sharing, and overhead rates.
- Dedication, high‑integrity, and teamwork.
- Possible exemption of education and experience prerequisites if an equivalent combination is demonstrated.
Preferred Qualifications:
- More than 3 years of experience in post‑award research administration and/or grant accounting.
- Professional certification in research administration (e.g., CRA or CFRA).
Annual salary range: $66,844.56 – $ (USD), exclusive of incentives and bonuses.
