The primary purpose of the Paramedic position is to provide and direct pre-hospital Basic and Advanced Life Support (BLS, ALS) in all weather conditions. The role involves working with other EMS team members under the supervision of a licensed Medical Control Physician (MCP) and EMS Supervisor. Responsibilities include assessing, treating, lifting, and moving patients of all ages and backgrounds using appropriate equipment and techniques, transporting patients to medical facilities, completing documentation, and supporting EMS operations while representing UH professionally.
QualificationsThe Paramedic must have at least two (2) years of EMS experience and two (2) years of EMS driving experience with a good driving record. Preferred qualifications include completion of the Certified Emergency Vehicle Operator (CEVO) course and possession of a valid PHTLS or BTLS provider card. The candidate must pass a medical evaluation and respirator fit test, and be able to wear an N95 mask according to PEOSHA standards.
Bilingual English/Spanish skills and experience with electronic medical records are preferred.
Current, active credentials as a NJ Mobile Intensive Care Paramedic or Nurse are required. Applicants without NJ MICN certification must obtain it prior to completing probation, and certification must be maintained without interruption. Reciprocity applicants may receive a conditional offer pending physical and background checks. A provisional EMT-Paramedic certification from NJDOH is required before starting. A valid NJ driver’s license, AHA BLS, ACLS, PALS or PEPP-A, ICS Level 100 or higher, NIMS Awareness, and Hazardous Materials Awareness certifications are required.
Verification of credentials through the designated background check agencies is also necessary.
The Paramedic must be in excellent physical condition, capable of seeing colors, hearing voice and radio communications, reading, speaking, smelling, sitting, standing, walking, lifting (up to 125 lbs.), and operating various equipment daily. Good manual dexterity and the ability to exert moderate to heavy physical effort are essential.
Work EnvironmentThe role requires working in all weather and environmental conditions, including extreme temperatures. The Paramedic must be able to lift and move patients in all circumstances, handle unpredictable situations, and be exposed to noise, patient crises, and potential exposure to blood-borne pathogens with appropriate protective equipment. Duties may involve stooping, kneeling, crawling, climbing, running, jumping, and working in hazardous or disaster environments.
