About the RoleThe mechanical insulator is involved in the successful daily completion of assigned work. The primary focus is on applying, removing, and repairing insulation and steam tracing on industrial equipment, pipes, ductwork, and other mechanical systems. The position involves working under the direction of the Plant Engineer and, during maintenance or construction, under the Facilities Lead.
Responsibilities- Lead the safety effort by personal example.
- Support full department compliance with safety rules to achieve zero accidents and encourage reporting of near misses.
- Support accident prevention during major construction or anytime maintenance contractors are on site.
- Identify high‑risk safety/productivity issues and help remedy them.
- Apply, remove, and repair insulation and steam tracing on industrial equipment, pipes, ductwork, or other mechanical systems such as heat exchangers, tanks, and vessels.
- Cover, seal, or finish insulated surfaces or access holes with covers, cladding, canvas strips, sealants, tape, cement or mastic.
- Determine the amounts and types of insulation needed and the methods of installation based on location, surface shape, and equipment use.
- Fit insulation around obstructions, shape insulating materials and protective coverings as required.
- Install sheet metal around insulated pipes with screws to protect the insulation from weather conditions or physical damage.
- Measure and cut insulation for covering surfaces, using tape measures, handsaws, knives, and scissors.
- Prepare surfaces for insulation application by brushing or spreading adhesives, cement, or asphalt, or by attaching metal pins to surfaces.
- Read blueprints and specifications to determine job requirements.
- Select appropriate insulation such as fiberglass, mineral wool, foam glass, etc., based on heat‑retaining or excluding characteristics.
- Install steam tracing to piping systems.
- Perform minor mechanical repairs.
- Operate a forklift, man lift, and a boom lift.
- Contribute to controlling costs and minimizing wastage in pursuit of daily work.
- Support the goal of minimum part sparing consistent with production goals and local vendor services.
- High School Diploma or GED Equivalent.
- Strong problem‑solving and math skills.
- Strong equipment troubleshooting skills.
- Excellent communication (verbal and written), time management, and organizational skills.
- 3–5 years of related experience in oil, chemical, pharmaceutical, or process manufacturing facility.
