We are looking for a registered nurse to work the overnight shift at the Northern State Prison in Newark, NJ. The contract is full‑time, 40 hours per week, and the position is open to nurses licensed in the State of New Jersey with experience in psychiatric care.
OverviewUniversity Correctional Health Care (UCHC) is part of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. UCHC provides a full spectrum of health services—including physical, mental health, dental and sex‑offender treatment—to individuals in the criminal‑justice system. The mental‑health team uses evidence‑based care in a correctional setting, working closely with health professionals and security personnel.
Responsibilities- Provide direct and indirect nursing care to meet physiological, psychosocial and emotional needs of inmates, including adults (18‑64 yrs) and geriatrics (65 + yrs).
- Apply psychiatric nursing standards and classification of mental disorders to develop inmate treatment plans with specific goals and interventions.
- Implement nursing actions that promote, maintain, or restore physical and mental health for all age groups.
- Evaluate inmate responses in collaboration with multidisciplinary care providers to ensure quality inmate care.
- Perform additional duties related to milieu and safety, as documented in required paperwork and supervisor observations.
- Assume responsibility for continuing education and professional development, contributing to the growth of colleagues.
- Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing with a license to practice in New Jersey.
- Minimum of one (1) year of psychiatric nursing experience.
- Valid CPR certification.
- Valid driver’s license and personal or alternate transportation to commute.
- Bachelor of Nursing (BSN) or equivalent.

Full‑time, 40 hours per week. Standard hours: 40.00. Daily work shift: night. Full onsite work arrangement required.
Physical Demands & Special Conditions- Must be a first responder capable of performing CPR for at least 10 minutes.
- Physically able to lift and carry up to 45 lb emergency treatment bag and assist in moving patients up to 50 lb.
- Approval from the Department of Corrections (DOC) required and adherence to all DOC security protocols.
