Supervising Omnibus Operator (NBOE) – Newark Public Schools
The Superintendent invites qualified and interested persons to apply for the position of Supervising Omnibus Operator within the Office of Transportation.
Overview
This title is governed by the New Jersey Civil Service Commission; meaning that a candidate for the position will be placed as a provisional employee. At a later date the candidate will be required to take an examination administered by the Civil Service Commission. Candidates must score and rank high enough on this examination in order to remain in the position as a permanent employee.
Definition
Under direction, supervises the activities of Omnibus Operators; may also drive, clean, service, and make minor repairs to vehicles used in transporting persons on assigned established routes or to special activities, events, or destinations; does related work as required.
Responsibilities
- Organizes assigned work and develops effective work methods.
- Gives suitable assignments to subordinates.
- Prepares clear, sound, accurate, and informative reports.
- Checks vehicles to ensure prescribed schedules are maintained.
- Ensures vehicles stop only at designated locations and passengers are loaded and discharged properly.
- Assigns routes and passenger pickup points to operators.
- Dispatches vehicles for emergency runs.
- May drive a motor vehicle with a passenger capacity of at least six (6) to transport persons on trips and established routes.
- Checks, cleans, and performs minor servicing of vehicles; checks operating safety devices, fuel, battery, oil, and water before departure.
- Establishes and maintains required records and files.
- May be required to learn and utilize various electronic and/or manual recording/information systems used by the agency.
- Performs other duties and tasks as assigned by supervisor.
Knowledge And Abilities
- Knowledge of state and local laws, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures related to public transportation operations and motor vehicle regulations.
- Knowledge of inspection procedures and safe operating practices.
- Knowledge of vehicle operation procedures and common violations in vehicle operations.
- Knowledge of local geography and safety precautions when dealing with passengers.
- Ability to analyze problems involving vehicle operations.
- Ability to organize and provide suitable work assignments to subordinates.
- Ability to drive vehicles in a skilled and safe manner.
- Ability to check, clean, service, and perform minor and emergency repairs on vehicles.
- Ability to maintain essential records and learn to use electronic/manual recording systems.
- Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English;
