Coordinator of School Transportation Services (NBOE)

The Superintendent invites qualified and interested persons to apply for the position of Coordinator of School Transportation Services within the Office of Pupil Transportation at Newark Public Schools. This title is governed by the New Jersey Civil Service Commission and will be placed as a provisional employee. At a later date the candidate will be required to take an examination administered by the Civil Service Commission.

Candidates must score and rank high enough on this examination to remain in the position as a permanent employee.

Definition: Under direction, plans, organizes, directs and coordinates school transportation programs, services, operations and staff; performs other related duties as required.

Basic Functions and Responsibilities
  • Directs and coordinates the operation, maintenance, scheduling and reporting of a fleet of school buses.
  • Supervises expenditures in budget categories affecting bus transportation in accordance with established regulations.
  • Plans and supervises bus routes; adjusts schedules and student bus assignments when necessary.
  • Plans, organizes and conducts driver training courses, periodic refresher courses in safety, and workshops for school bus drivers.
  • Prepares cost estimates and budget recommendations.
  • Maintains communications with all personnel involved in pupil transportation, including parents, school principals and the general public.
  • Instructs and gives assignments to staff involved in student transportation.
  • Recruits, selects and recommends drivers and other transportation personnel.
  • Prepares and compiles detailed and complex transportation reports and records for submission to the Business Manager, Superintendent of Schools, County Superintendent and State Department of Education.
  • Investigates accidents involving school buses and recommends disciplinary action when appropriate.
  • Oversees the registration process for bus licensure.
  • Maintains a central record of use of all vehicular units, including operating costs.
  • Visually inspects buses for needed repairs and ensures safety provisions and sanitary conditions meet standards.
  • Supervises the preparation and maintenance of complex, detailed correspondence, records and files.
  • Supervises the work operations and/or functional programs and has responsibility for effectively recommending the hiring, firing, promoting, demoting and/or disciplining of employees.
  • Will be required to learn how to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units.
  • Performs other duties and tasks assigned by supervisor.
Qualifications and Requirements

Applicants must meet one of the following or a combination of both experience and education. Thirty (30) semester hour credits are equal to one (1) year of relevant experience.

  • Seven (7) years of professional experience involving the organization, planning, direction and scheduling of mass passenger transportation services, three (3) years of which shall have been in a supervisory capacity.
  • OR Possession of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and three (3) years of the above-mentioned professional supervisory experience.

“Professional experience” refers to work that is creative, analytical, evaluative, and interpretive; requires a range and depth of specialized knowledge of the profession's principles, concepts, theories, and practices; and is performed with the authority to act according to one's own judgment and make accurate and informed decisions.

License and Certification
  • Appointees may be required to possess a School Transportation Supervisor Certificate issued by the Rutgers University Center for Government Services.
  • Appointees will be required to possess a driver’s license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
