Job summary

We are delighted to offer the opportunity for dynamic, engaging and committed resident doctors to join our team in Critical Care Medicine. This post (ST1-2 equivalent) will be based in Critical Care across Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and is available from February 2026 for 6‑12 months. Note this post is critical care only (no anaesthesia placements). The post is suitable for applicants who have completed foundation training (or equivalent) and possess previous paid clinical experience within the NHS.

The individual will be expected to perform duties and take clinical responsibility to ST1‑2 level. GMC registration with a full licence to practice is required; this post is not suitable for MTI programme sponsorship. Previous paid NHS experience is essential.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will take part in a full shift rota with other trainees, providing 24‑hour care for patients including weekends and night shifts.

  • Immediate responsibility for care of critical care patients
  • Responsible for the admission and discharge of patients
  • Liaising with other departments and specialties as appropriate
  • Maintaining inpatient record
  • Ordering routine and emergency investigations and receiving and reviewing their results
  • Managing routine and unexpected problems on the critical care unit as they arise
  • Reviewing and admitting new admissions and referrals from both the emergency department and wards
  • Transfer of patient to radiology etc. as appropriate
  • Compliance with trust and departmental protocols and guidelines
Education and Qualifications
Essential
  • Primary Medical Qualification
  • Full GMC registration with licence to practice
Desirable
  • Postgraduate intensive care qualification (or part)
  • Postgraduate qualification (or part) in anaesthesia or medicine/emergency medicine, FRCA, MRCP
Clinical Skills and Knowledge
Essential
  • Satisfactory completion of foundation training (or equivalent)
  • Valid UK Resus Council Advanced Life Support
  • Previous paid UK NHS clinical experience (medical observerships/placements will not count as clinical experience)
  • Evidence of excellent history & examination skills
  • Able to formulate a working diagnosis
  • Able to order appropriate investigations
  • Knows when to appropriately seek assistance from a senior colleague
Desirable
  • 3‑6 months prior experience in Intensive care
  • 3‑6 months prior experience in anaesthesia
  • Prior general medicine training
Maintaining Clinical Competence
Essential
  • Written evidence of satisfactory training to date e.g. workplace assessments
  • Suitable procedural skills
Desirable
  • Advanced airway skills
  • Vascular access experience, arterial lines/CVC
Teaching
Essential
  • Experience of supervising junior staff
  • Ability to teach clinical skills
Desirable
  • Feedback from teaching
Clinical Governance, Audit and Research
Essential
  • Demonstratable evidence of audit/QIP experience
Desirable
  • Evidence of completion of project and change of practice
  • Experience of research
  • Completion of Good Clinical Practice
Communication, Relationships and Working with Colleagues

Salary: £52,656 per annum pro rata
