An exciting opportunity has arisen for a dynamic, engaging and committed individual to work in Newcastle Hospitals trust. This post is designed to suit an individual with an interest in HPB and Transplant Surgery who is looking for a broad experience in HPB, Liver, Kidney and Pancreas transplantation.

The senior trainee will have completed core training and will have passed MRCS, in addition the candidate needs to have experience of HPB surgery at Core Trainee or Specialty Trainee level.

You must have full GMC registration at the time of application. Previous NHS experience is essential (this does not include clinical attachments or observerships). This post is to commence May 2026 for 12 months.

Main duties of the job

The post would suit a trainee in General Surgery with a special interest in HPB and/or Transplant and has a commitment to the HPB on call rota. This post will provide a solid basis from which to apply for specialist research funding. Specialist training in multi-organ retrieval (for transplant focused trainees) is also available.

responsibilities General Aspects

This post is attached to HPB and Transplant surgery based in the Freeman Hospital. The individual will work on the ST3+ tier and as such be expected to perform duties and take clinical responsibility to this level.

The Freeman Hospital is unique in the United Kingdom in hosting the Institute of Transplantation which brings all aspects of solid organ and cell transplantation under one roof. The post holder will be able to gain experience in liver, kidney, pancreas, multivisceral, autoislet and alloislet transplantation as well as experience of specialist HPB, neuroendocrine and sarcoma surgery. Multiorgan retrieval, as part of the National Organ Retrieval Service, is delivered by the team as well.

Some of the team also specialise in Robotic surgery and exposure, as well as acquisition of skills, in this specialist area is also available. If successful, the applicant will be asked to outline which areas they would like to focus on during the Fellowship.
