Job summary

We are delighted to offer an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated and ambitious individual to join our integrated Infection Team. This post provides the chance to become part of a progressive and forward-thinking department that is driving the continued growth and development of integrated infection services. The team delivers a comprehensive seven-day service both locally and regionally, including support across Northern Ireland.

We are seeking an enthusiastic and collaborative clinician with strong leadership capabilities and a commitment to excellence in patient care. The successful candidate will have a broad interest in Infectious Diseases and General Internal Medicine, complemented by excellent clinical skills, strong academic and educational achievements, and the ability to inspire and support multidisciplinary teams.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will play a key role in the management of both acute and chronic medical conditions, supporting the wider Medical Directorate while contributing to the delivery of a regional specialist Infectious Diseases service. This includes participation in out-of-hours Infectious Diseases advice and support, helping to ensure the provision of high-quality specialist care across the region.

Job responsibilities

This is a substantive Consultant post within the Department of Infection and Tropical Medicine at Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The successful candidate will join a well-established team, contributing to all aspects of the general Infectious Diseases service while supporting the continued development of the department. The post holder will provide clinical leadership and specialist expertise across the breadth of Infectious Diseases practice, with opportunities to develop and lead specific areas of clinical interest in collaboration with the Head of Department and Consultant colleagues.

This role offers considerable scope for service development, innovation, teaching, research, and regional leadership.

Person Specification Education, Qualifications and Specialist Skills Essential
  • Primary Medical Qualification.
  • Full GMC Registration.
  • Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register (within 6 months from the date of the AAC).
  • MRCP, CCT in , dual-accredited with any of MM, MV or GIM.
  • Higher degree (MA, MPH, MD, PhD, or equivalent)
  • Special skills training in the specialty.
Clinical Experience Essential
  • Evidence of experience in the specialty.
  • Evidence of a substantial commitment to the specialty.
  • Ability to offer an expert clinical opinion within the speciality.
  • Ability to take independent responsibility for the clinical care of patients referred to a tertiary centre.
Management and Administration Experience Essential
  • Involvement with management and project leadership within the specialty.
  • Evidence of involvement in authoring or reviewing clinical guidelines.
  • An understanding of Clinical Governance.
  • Proven management and administrative experience and understanding of management goals.
  • Evidence of leadership / project management.
  • Evidence of having implemented change.
  • Experience in developing and implementing new technologies.
Teaching Essential
  • Experience of supervising junior medical staff.
  • Experience of participation in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
  • Ability to teach clinical / technical / practical skills.
  • Attendance at courses to develop teaching skills.
  • Postgraduate qualification in medical education.
  • Evidence of involvement in and understanding of research methodology and publication of findings.
  • Research/critical review of literature.
  • Publications in the last five years.
  • Evidence of participation in audit.
  • Evidence of having changed practice as a result of audit.
  • Evidence of having revisited the audit to assess improvement.
