The School of Biomedical, Nutritional and Sport Sciences, part of our Faculty of Medical Sciences, is seeking to appoint a passionate and committed Lecturer in Food and Human Nutrition on a permanent basis. The School is a lively, friendly community with research, innovation and teaching strengths across nutrition and dietetics, sport and exercise science and biomedical sciences. The School has seen significant growth and development in recent years including over £57 million investment in new state‑of‑the‑art teaching and laboratory facilities located within the Dame Margaret Barbour Building and the Sports Centre.
As a Lecturer in the School, you will be significantly involved in the development and delivery of a range of high‑quality teaching and learning activities to support primarily the AfN accredited BSc (Hons) Human Nutrition and BSc (Hons) Nutrition with Food Marketing programmes. There will also be opportunities to contribute to other UG and PG degree programmes within the School.
As well as developing and delivering teaching activities, the role includes marking assessments, UG and/or PG project supervision, providing pastoral support and participating in the management and administration of the degree programme(s) as required.
The successful candidate will also be expected to make a significant contribution to research within the Human Nutrition and Exercise Research Centre and be able to demonstrate an independent research profile. We would particularly like to hear from applicants with expertise in any of our research strength areas which include nutrition and metabolic disease, brain health and brain ageing, childhood nutrition and nutrition and cancer.
Applicants will need a PhD in an appropriate discipline with some prior teaching experience.
Teaching & Learning- Provide high quality teaching and learning and student support
- Mentor and support students throughout their studies in the role of academic advisor
- Set and mark assessment of modules in accordance with University standards and utilise on‑line and digitised curricula and education frameworks
- Contribute to curriculum development
- Ensure all our students benefit from studying in a research‑intensive, research‑excellent academic environment
- Provide education for life, that engages, challenges and supports our students to discover and fulfil their potential both while they are studying with us and once they have graduated
- Conduct research that demonstrates international standards of excellence in terms of originality, significance and rigour in the subject area of Food and Human Nutrition
- Contribute to the research profile of the School of Biomedical, Nutritional and Sport Sciences and the Human Nutrition and Exercise Research Centre
- Pursue external funding and publish high quality outputs
- Demonstrate impact by developing research‑based solutions to real‑world problems and engage with external stakeholders to develop the impact of your work
- Supervise PGR (postgraduate research) students
- Contribute to the Vision, Mission and Strategy of the School and University
- Operate as an active citizen in the School of Biomedical, Nutritional and Sport Sciences and Human Nutrition and Exercise Research Centre communities
- Have a commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion and ethics, responsibility and sustainability
- Support national and international activities for the development of the discipline
- Take responsibility for a defined management or administrative role such as Module Leader, Year Tutor, Degree Programme Director, Research Director, Outreach Co‑ordinator
- Contribute to the wider work of the School, Faculty and University through input to project teams, working groups and committees
- Experience of delivering research‑led teaching in core nutritional sciences, making effective use of technology to enhance learning
- Ability to secure research funding
- Experience of publishing international and world‑leading research
