Learning Mentor

We are currently looking for a Learning Mentor to join our new centre, The Bridge at Northumbria University.

The Bridge is a partnership between Cambridge Education Group (CEG) and Northumbria University that aims to transform access to higher education by supporting students from a wide range of backgrounds to realise their potential. Combining high-quality teaching, personalised support and a strong sense of community, The Bridge provides an alternative entry route into higher education and creates opportunities for learners who might otherwise be excluded from university study.

Through this approach, The Bridge seeks to improve educational attainment, support social mobility and enable more students to progress successfully to a Northumbria University degree.

Key responsibilities of the Learning Mentor include:

• Act as a trusted adviser to students, supporting them to develop and follow personalised learning plans and achieve their academic and personal goals.
• Deliver high-quality one-to-one and group mentoring that promotes confidence, resilience, independent learning and academic success.
• Monitor student engagement, attendance and academic performance, using data to identify trends, inform interventions and support progression.
• Design and implement targeted support plans for students at risk of disengagement or underperformance.
• Support students in developing effective study skills, time management and learning strategies, preparing them for successful progression into higher education.

• Promote student wellbeing, belonging and engagement through proactive support and relationship building.
• Provide guidance to students experiencing academic, personal or wellbeing challenges, signposting and referring to specialist services where appropriate.
• Identify and elevate safeguarding and welfare concerns in accordance with organisational policies and procedures.

• Work closely with academic colleagues, the Centre Director and Northumbria University staff to support student success, retention and progression.
• Maintain effective relationships with University colleagues and external stakeholders to ensure a coordinated and seamless student experience.
• Undertake such other duties as may reasonably be required to support the effective operation and development of The Bridge, consistent with the level and nature of the post.

• Maintain accurate records of student engagement, interventions and progress, ensuring compliance with organisational and data protection requirements.
• Produce regular reports and updates on student progress, engagement and outcomes for the Centre Director and other stakeholders.

• Contribute to outreach, recruitment, marketing and community engagement activities (where appropriate) that promote access to higher education.
• Act as an ambassador for The Bridge, inspiring prospective students and supporting initiatives that widen participation and raise aspirations.

• To undertake other duties not specifically stated above, which from time to time are necessary for the effective performance of the business without altering the nature or level of responsibility involved.

• Educated to degree or equivalent qualification level (essential)

• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build trust and rapport with students from diverse backgrounds (essential).
• Strong coaching and mentoring skills, with the ability to motivate, challenge and support students to achieve their goals (essential).
• Commitment to widening participation, social mobility and supporting access to higher education (essential).
• Ability to interpret student engagement and performance data and use insights to inform effective interventions (essential).
• Strong organisational skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities, maintain accurate records and meet deadlines (essential).
• Ability to hold supportive but challenging conversations with empathy, professionalism and sound judgement (essential).
• Confident IT skills, including Microsoft Office applications and digital learning platforms (essential).

• Experience of tutoring, mentoring, coaching or advising students in an educational setting (essential).
